Men’s Tennis Prepares for Four Matches This Weekend

The Red Storm will host Wagner for a Doubleheader on Friday
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2023) - The St. John's men's tennis team will play two doubleheaders in three days this weekend. The Johnnies will host a doubleheader against Wagner on Friday with first serve set for 11 a.m. To close the weekend, the squad will travel to West Point, N.Y. for a doubleheader against Army and Marist starting at 12 p.m.
This week has seen a few different Johnnies earn conference and national recognition. Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna broke into the top 60 ITA doubles rankings, landing at no. 54. On Monday, Carl Gustafsson was tabbed BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week, and the tandem of Sergio Molina and Nishant Dahas were selected as BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week.
Through four matches this season, two Johnnies have maintained a perfect 3-0 in singles play. Anton Stendal and Molina have been perfect in three matches, leading the team in wins. In doubles play, the duos of Gustafsson and Stendal, and Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves lead the way with a 3-1 record, respectively.
Last week, the Johnnies played its lone match on the road at Lehigh. The Red Storm swept the Mountain Hawks, 7-0. Five Johnnies ended the day with a pair of wins. All three doubles matches were tight, resulting in needing seven sets to win the match. The Red Storm won four of the singles contests in straight sets.
Wagner opened its season against Navy last Sunday. The Seahawks were swept by the Midshipmen, 7-0 in Annapolis, Md. Wagner will also travel to Temple on Sunday for its fourth match of the season, after its meeting with the Red Storm. Wagner finished 2-13 last season.
The Red Storm have won all seven meetings against Seahawks. The Johnnies won the most recent meeting last spring, 4-0.
Army enters the weekend, 5-3 after losing two-of-three matches last weekend. The Black Knights started the spring campaign 4-1, before falling to Brown and Richmond. Army will host Marist at 9 a.m. on Sunday, before taking on the Red Storm at noon. These two matches will conclude the Black Knights 10-match homestand to start the season.
The Johnnies are 2-1 against the Black Knights. The Red Storm won via a sweep on January 26, 2020 in West Point.
Marist has opened its season with a trio of losses. The Red Foxes have fell to Hofstra, Lehigh and NJIT so far this season. This weekend's match will end four consecutive road contests for Marist as they will host North Dakota in two weeks.
St. John's leads the all-time meetings with Marist, 5-1. The two programs faced-off last in West Point on January 25, 2020, where the Red Storm were victorious, 6-1.
St. John's will be back in action for next Wednesday for a midweek match at home against Hofstra. The Red Storm will then host Boston U. on Saturday also at USTA.
