Men’s Tennis Cruises Past Siena, 6-1

The Red Storm will travel to Drexel for a Saturday morning match
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 10, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team triumphed over Siena, 6-1, on Friday at the USTA Tennis Center.
The Red Storm earned its 10th victory of the season, improving to 10-4.
The Johnnies won the first point of the match, clinching the doubles point after winning the first two matches. St. John's top pairing of Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna toppled Dante Russo and Edward Vo, 6-1. The Johnnies clinched the point with a 6-2 victory by Carl Gustafsson and Adam Groves in the second slot against Agustin Suarez and Matt Nardore. The duo became the 19th different pair that Head Coach Dillon Pottish has used in his lineup this season.
In singles play, the Johnnies won five of the six contests to secure the victory. Ryota Kaneda won the first singles match of the day for the Johnnies efficiently, 6-1, 6-1 over Navdore. Kaneda improved to 7-3 on the season, the third most on the team. Marques defeated Russo, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Antuna earned his second win of the season after missing over a month in a three-set victory against Tomas del Olmo, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 10-3. Gustafsson notched a win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3 over Suarez. Gustafsson also earned his seventh win to match Kaneda for third-most on the team. Groves also picked up a three-set win, defeating Jose Pablo Davila, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-6.
St. John's will be back in action tomorrow as the squad travels to Philadelphia, Pa. to take on Drexel. First serve is set for noon at the Vidas Courts.
