Men’s Tennis Prepares for Pair of Weekend Matches

The Red Storm will host Siena on Friday before traveling to Drexel the following day
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 9, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team will play a pair of matches opening with a home contest against Siena on Friday at 12:15 p.m. at the USTA Tennis Center. The following day, the squad will travel to Drexel for a noon match at the Vidas Courts.
The Johnnies return to Queens after a three-match road trip facing three top 75 ranked teams on the road in the previous two weeks.
Last week, St. John's was edged by No. 73 Ole Miss, 5-2. Giuseppe De Camelis and Sergio Molina each earned a pair of wins against the Rebels. The tandem teamed up to win at the No. 2 doubles spot, and they each won in their singles match. Molina won in straight sets and De Camelis needed three sets to catch the victory.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings. The duo of Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their five wins are the most on the team. Carl Gustafsson and Anton Stendal tout a 4-1 record all at the No. 2 slot. Earlier in the season Diogo Marques and Axel Vila Antuna were ranked No. 54 by the ITA. The duo is 1-1 on the season after falling to the top Ole Miss pairing.
In singles play transfer Molina and freshman Nishant Dabas lead the Johnnies with nine wins on the season. Gustafsson and Kaneda both have earned six wins on the season.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated a 74-19 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Siena holds a 6-5 record entering the weekend. Last Sunday, the Saints swept Colgate, 7-0. Siena is led by freshman Edward Vo. Vo received his second MAAC Player of the Week honor on March 1, after a pair of singles wins against Bucknell and Lehigh.
The Red Storm have won the two previous meetings with the Saints, both sweeps. The Johnnies won the most recent match, 4-0, on Feb. 1, 2019 in Loudonville, N.Y.
Drexel fell to Temple in its only match of the week last Wednesday, dropping its overall record to 4-6. On Feb. 24, the Dragons opened their CAA slate with a 4-3 lost to William & Mary. Drexel is led by Daniel Dudockin who carries a 6-3 record into the weekend. Drexel's only match of the weekend is against St. John's.
The Johnnies own a 4-0 record against the Dragons in the all-time series. St. John's won the most recent last March, 6-1 in Queens. The Red Storm are 2-0 against Drexel in Philadelphia.
St. John's will play its lone match of next week on Friday at Delaware at 12 p.m.
