St. John’s Splits BIG EAST Opening Doubleheader Against Providence

Red Storm won the first game, 5-2 and dropped in game two, 2-1
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 10, 2023) – The St. John's softball team split in a doubleheader on Friday against Providence in its BIG EAST opener at Red Storm Field.
After the pair of games, both teams finished the day 1-1 in conference play on the season. The Red Storm are 7-13 overall, while the Friars are 8-10.
Game One
Carolina Zamudio carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. She improved to 5-3 on the season, notching her fifth complete game. The Mexico City native struck out one, and walked two while only allowing two hits.
Jess Bianco stole four bases while reaching base in three of her four plate appearances.
In the third inning, Sydney Totarsky belted a double to lead off the frame for the Red Storm. After a sac bunt by Natalie Casto, freshman Jess Bianco notched her first collegiate RBI driving in Totarsky for the first Johnnies run of the day.
Zamudio had only surrendered a base runner on a walk in the second inning, before Tiana Wren broke through knocking a ball over the wall to tie the game at one in the fifth inning.
The Red Storm responded in the bottom half of the inning. After reaching base for the third time in the game, Bianco swiped her fourth bag of the contest putting herself in scoring position with London Jarrard stepping up to the plate. Jarrard hit a grounder that was muffed by the second baseman, allowing Bianco to score from second and break the deadlock at one. With the bases loaded, Amy Mallah ripped a single down the line to plate two more Johnnies opening the lead to 4-1 in favor of St. John's.
In the sixth inning, the Johnnies added an insurance run. On 1-2 count to lead off the sixth, Casto belted a shot over the wall in left to extend the lead to 5-1.
Providence showed they still had fight in them in the final inning. After a leadoff walk, Lea Kosinski doubled to plate the first run of the frame. Zamudio then shut down the Friars retiring the final three batters to clinch the 5-2 victory for the Red Storm.
Game Two
Despite reaching base in all but one inning, the Red Storm were only able to scratch one run across in the second game of the day.
Providence struck first in the second inning against Red Storm starter, Hannah Mearns. After an error put a Friar runner on first, Rachael Petrarca hit the top of the wall and bounced over to plate two runs of the second inning.
In the third inning, Jarrard laced a double to the gap with two outs, but was stranded to end the inning. Similarly in the fourth frame, Peyton Cody led off the stanza with a double, but was unable to score.
Once again in the fifth inning, Friars' starter Elysia Cunnigan allowed traffic on the base paths for the Red Storm. Pinch-hitter Elanna Lysiak singled to center and then advanced to third on the error in the outfield with no one out. But, the next hitter grounded into a double play with Lysiak being tagged out at the plate.
Mearns retired 13 straight batters spanning from the second to sixth inning. Mearns allowed just four hits, whiling striking out four, and zero walks.
In the Johnnies final chance in the seventh resulted in a run for the Red Storm. After a leadoff double by Natalie Alheidt. She advanced to third on a sac bunt, and scored on an RBI single by Bianco. The RBI groundout brought up Jarrard, who reached on a hit by pitch. Jarrard would be stranded after Cunnigan forced a groundout to end the game and secure the 2-1 Friar victory.
St. John's will conclude the three-game series with Providence on Saturday at noon. The game will be streamed on BEDN.
