QUEENS, N.Y. (March 9, 2023) – The St. John's softball team will open BIG EAST play with a three-game series against Providence.

On Saturday, the series will conclude, with first pitch at the originally scheduled time of noon, weather dependent. Saturday's contest will be streamed on BEDN.
The Johnnies hosted the Red Storm Classic last weekend, the first multi-team softball event on campus, since 2019. The Red Storm cruised in day one shutting out Drexel, 4-0 in the first game and defeating Quinnipiac, 9-1 in five inning. Freshman Sydney Totarsky drove in three of the four St. John's runs against Drexel. Anese Thompson also had an impressive weekend recording five RBIs against Quinnipiac and notching at least one hit in all four games. She is currently riding a five-game hit streak.
On Sunday, the Red Storm dropped a pair to Drexel and Quinnipiac in the final day of the Red Storm Classic. In her first collegiate start, freshman Loreley Francia dazzled carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Spring, Tex. native notched six strikeouts and allowed just three hits in the loss to Drexel.
London Jarrard has been one of the most consistent offensive threats for the Red Storm. The sophomore ranks among the top five in the conference in hit by pitches (first), on-base percentage (second), stolen bases (second), and slugging percentage (fifth). Jarrard's nine stolen bases is tied with Jess Bianco for the second most in the BIG EAST. Freshman Katie Whittaker ranks among the top 10 in three categories in the league.
St. John's has opened BIG EAST play at home in each of the past three seasons. The Johnnies are 1-2 in the first game, and have not won an opening series since 2018 in Georgetown.
Providence has yet to play a home game and enters BIG EAST play, 7-9. The Friars best weekend came at the Charleston Southern Classic two weeks ago. PC won four of the five games, and earned two of the three BIG EAST Weekly Awards.
The Friars return to the east after six straight games in Tennessee during the school's spring break trip. The Friars picked up a pair of wins against Saint Louis and Lipscomb. Providence concluded its southern trip with a stop against Austin Peay, falling 8-0 on Tuesday.
Jacque Harrington has provided a boost in the Friars offensive attack. The junior leads the league in homers (5), on-base percentage (.538), and batting average (.432). She also has tallied 12 RBIs and 19 hits. Harrington was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 20 after slugging three homers and seven RBIs in five games in Charleston Southern.

Providence and St. John's have been matching up for over 40 years, and are each other's most common opponent. The first game on Friday will be the 119th meeting between the two programs. Last spring, the Friars took two of three from the Red Storm in Rhode Island.
The Red Storm will return to action with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Monmouth. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
