QUEENS, N.Y. (March 18, 2023)- The St. John's men's lacrosse team fell to Saint Joseph's, 16-10, at DaSilva Memorial Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Storm drew within one late in the third quarter, but the Hawks outscored, 7-2, over the final 19:31 to clinch the victory in Queens.
Caiden Vlasimsky and Sean Duffy each tallied a hat-trick against St. Joseph's. Vlasimsky added two assists to finish the day with a career-high five points, leading the team. Saturday's effort marked the second-straight game the sophomore midfielder has found the back of the net three times. Duffy's hat-trick was his third of the season and the sixth time in eight starts that he has found paydirt in 2023.
Luke Mangan and Connor Kalmus each scored twice, and five Johnnies- Braden Fitzsimmons, Corey Hall, Brian Kelly, Jack Lutfi and Caleb Zuhoski- logged one assist apiece in the contest.
On defense, Kyle Munson set a new career high in saves, steering away 16 shots in his seventh start of the season. Kyle Wasilewski caused two turnovers and scooped up a squad-best four groundballs.
St. John's (0-8) opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game when Vlasimsky tickled the twine from long range to give the Red Storm the early 1-0 lead.
St. Joseph's (4-3) quickly responded with a solo effort from Levi Anderson to tie the game at one.
Kalmus restored the Red Storm lead at the 7:45 mark in the first with a leaping shot that found the top-right corner of the cage to give the home side a 2-1 lead.
After a Hawks score knotted the game at two, Vlasimsky and Mangan scored to propel the Johnnies to a multi-goal advantage, 4-2, with just over a minute to go in the opening frame.
Two quick scores by Saint Joseph's evened the game at four after 15 minutes of play.
The Hawks seized control of the matchup with a 5-0 second-quarter run, fueled by Anderson and Matt Bohmer, to vault the visitors to a 9-4 run with 4:49 to go in the first half.
Mangan put a halt to Saint Joseph's scoring spurt with his first score of the day to make the halftime score 9-5.
In the third quarter, Vlasimsky completed his hat-trick and Duffy scored twice to cut the Red Storm's deficit to one, 9-8, with 8:41 remaining.
The Hawks answered back with a 4-0 run that extended in the final period. Anderson scored three times and Carter Page found the back of the net once to expand the visitors' advantage to 13-8 at the 12:41 mark of the fourth.
Goals by Kalmus and Duffy inched St. John's closer, 13-10, but that was as close the Red Storm would get as Saint Joseph's tallied the final three scores of the afternoon to secure the 16-10 victory.
St. John's will close out the non-conference portion of its 2023 slate next Saturday when Richmond comes calling to Queens. First face-off from DaSilva Memorial Field is set for 1 p.m.
