Seven Johnnies will compete for a national title
QUEENS, N.Y.- After a successful outing at the NCAA Northeast Regional, the St. John's fencing program will travel to Durham, N.C., in search of a second national championship. The four-day meet will get underway on Thursday and conclude on Sunday.
The meet will be streamed on GoDuke.com, and live results will be available on FencingTimeLive.com.
Seven student-athletes, three women and four men, will make the trip south to battle for an individual national title.
Ahmed Ferjani and Fares Ferjani are set to battle in the men's saber category which will take place on Thursday and Sunday. Fares Ferjani will participate in his third NCAA Championships while Ahmed will be competing for the second time in as many seasons. Last year, Fares finished in a tie for third, and Ahmed finished 15th. Jan Jurkiewicz will face off against the best in the nation in men's foil. The Poland native finished 12th and was named a Third Team All-American in 2022. Paul Fortin is set to make his NCAA Championships debut in men's epee.
On the women's side, Nicole Gavrilko and Julia Cieslar will compete in the women's epee and saber, respectively. Gavrilko received her fourth bid to the NCAA Championships, and Cieslar qualified for the second time in as many years. Cieslar is the younger sister of St. John's most recent national champion, Karolina Cieslar, who won an individual title in 2019. Malwina Kolodziejczyk will make her national championship debut in women's foil.
The field of 144 fencers will first battle in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. The top four finishers in round-robin competition will fence in 15-touch semifinal bouts with the winners competing against each other to determine first and second place. The remaining two fencers will finish in a tie for third.
A school's place finish will be determined by points earned by each student-athlete. A team will be awarded one point for every individual victory during round-robin competition.
