Red Storm tallied 17 hits in the first two games of the weekend series
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's baseball team opened its series against the Richmond Spiders with a doubleheader split on Friday.
The Red Storm took the first game by a score of 8-5, and the Spiders ground out a 3-2 win in the second matchup.
Marty Higgins went 3-for-6 on the day, including two hits in the twin-bill finale. Paul Orbon logged three RBIs in the Red Storm's win in game one.
Nick Cirelli picked up his second win of the year on the mound, tossing four shutout innings while allowing only two hits. The redshirt senior lowered his ERA to a solid 1.29 in the winning effort.
Game 1
The Red Storm proved to be efficient in the 8-5 win in game one, scoring those eight runs on just eight hits. Kevin Michaels, Aaron Mannand Austin Machado accounted for six of those hits.
Richmond struck first in the top of the second to jump in front, 1-0. After two batters reached base and advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt, Christian Beal roped a single to left to send the runner at third scampering home to give the Spiders a one-run edge.
The visitors doubled their lead in the fourth courtesy of a sac fly from Jared Sprague-Lott that allowed Jordan Jaffe to cross the dish.
The Red Storm bats came to life in the home half of the fourth, scoring twice to knot the series opener at two. Michaels led off the inning with a bullet double down the left-field line before Mann laced a single to right to put runners at the corners with no one out. Michaels tallied the first Red Storm run of the afternoon on a balk that also put Mann in scoring position. After a Machado fly-out allowed him to tag up and move up 90 feet, Mann tied the game on an RBI groundout by Higgins.
Richmond answered back with three in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 5-2. With a runner on second and two outs, Jason Neff found the right-center gap to send the runner home. Johnny Hipsman followed up with an RBI single and stole second before Jordan Jaffe capped off the rally with a run-scoring double.
The Johnnies rallied with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to even the score at five. With runners at second and third, Machado found the left-field grass to bring both runners home before advancing to second on the throw. After reaching third on a Higgins single, Machado touched home thanks to a perfect bunt by Orbon up the first-base line, tying the game.
St. John's scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to vault in front, 8-5. After Mann and Machado reached second and third, Orbon smacked a groundball that ricocheted off the pitcher's leg into left field to score two runs. Two batters later, Ballestero got hit by an errant pitch with the bases loaded to tally the third run of the frame.
Cirelli slammed the door in the ninth, retiring the Spiders in order to secure the series-opening win.
Game 2
St. John's logged nine hits but fell to Richmond, 3-2, in the afternoon's second game.
After a scoreless first, the Red Storm cracked the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Mann and Higgins reached base by way of the single before advancing to second and third on a productive groundout by Paul Orbon. Mann sprinted home on a wild pitch to give the Red Storm the early 1-0 lead.
The two teams traded a run in the third, and the Red Storm maintained its lead, 2-1, heading to the fourth.
Richmond tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run to left by Jared Sprague-Lott before jumping on top in the sixth when Hipsman belted a two-out RBI double to give the Spiders a 3-2 lead.
Richmond's Esteban Rodriguez shut down the Johnnies offense over the final four innings of the contest, allowing two hits and striking out eight batters.
The Red Storm looked to rally in the ninth, getting runners on the corners with two outs. Rodriguez extinguished the comeback attempt by striking out the final batter of the ballgame to even the series at one game apiece.
