Red Storm will take on the Spiders in a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a noon affair on Sunday.
QUEENS, N.Y. – Due to forecasted inclement weather moving through the area this weekend, the St. John's baseball team has adjusted its weekend schedule against Richmond at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Johnnies and Spiders will play a doubleheader on Friday afternoon with game one scheduled for 1 p.m. and game two slated approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the opening contest. Both teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with first pitch set for noon.
All three games will have live stats and an audio-only broadcast available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (13-6) is coming off a 4-2 setback at Wagner on Wednesday, seeing its six-game winning streak snapped. Luke Orbon and Jimmy Keenan provided the Red Storm offense, tallying an RBI apiece. Relievers Ben Adams and Nick Cirelli combined for three shutout innings to keep the Johnnies close in Staten Island.
Despite the loss, St. John's continues to find itself among the best, both in the BIG EAST and at the national level. With a .325 team batting average (10th in NCAA) and 52 doubles (11th), the Red Storm finishes its slash line with a conference-best .418 on-base percentage and .485 slugging percentage. The team's 228 hits this season are also ranked inside the nation's top 25, good for 24th.
Individually, corner infielders Aaron Mann and Marty Higgins are swinging the two hottest bats in the BIG EAST, batting .432 and .405, respectively.
Starter Joe Mascio has been electric over his last three outings, boasting a 3-0 record with an 0.93 ERA and 17 strikeouts across 17.0 innings of work. The opposition is hitting just .167 over that stretch. Tyler Roche is slated to make his 2023 debut after missing the 2022 season due to Tommy John surgery.
Friday will mark the 14th all-time meeting between the two schools since 1978 as the Johnnies hold an 8-5 edge. It will also mark the first time both teams will face each other at the Jack. In their last meeting on Feb. 19, 2017, St. John's took down Richmond, 7-3, behind a Jesse Berardi eventual game-winning two-run single.
Richmond (10-11) enters the weekend slate with a 10-11 record after suffering a 12-6 loss to Towson. Prior to its loss, the Spiders earned a three-game sweep of Siena.
Also a team batting over .300 on the season, this weekend's visitors have relied on sophomore Jake Elbeery, who is hitting a team-best .390 with 16 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
The Johnnies are expected to see right-hander Estaban Rodriguez out of the bullpen. The sophomore hurler boasts a 2-0 mark through six relief appearances with a 2.25 ERA and 27 strikeouts across 24.0 innings of work.
