Men’s Tennis Sweeps Villanova, 7-0, for Second BIG EAST Victory

The Red Storm will finish the week with a trio of matches
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team notched its second-straight BIG EAST victory with a 7-0 sweep against Villanova on Wednesday afternoon at the Courts at St. John's.
With the win, the Red Storm move to 2-0 in BIG EAST play, and 14-4 overall. With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 6-10, 0-1.
The Red Storm notched the first point of the match clinching the doubles point with a pair of victories. Diogo Marques and Sergio Molina didn't allow Lukas Choi and Justin Suarez to win a single game notching a 6-0 victory at the top spot. The Johnnies secured the point on a 6-2 win by Carl Gustaffson and Adam Groves over Trey Fourticq and Tighe Brunetti.
In singles play, four of the six matches were decided in straight sets. Three Johnnies picked up their second win of the match. Marques knocked off Brunetti, 6-2, 6-2 to notch his seventh victory on the year. Groves made quick work of Ryan Nguyen, 6-2, 6-1 for his seventh win of the season. Kaneda earned his 11th win with a three-set victory over Fourticq 6-0, 3-6, 7-6. Sergio Molina notched his team-best 12th win with a 6-0, 6-4 defeat of Brunetti. Matthew Mosejczuk secured his first victory of the season with a 8-3 win against Suarez.
St. John's will close out the week with a pair of matches on Friday and Sunday. The Red Storm will travel to Yale for a Friday night match at 7 p.m. before returning to Queens to host St. Francis Brooklyn and Queens College on Sunday.
