Men’s Tennis to Complete the Weekend with a Trio of Matches

The Red Storm will travel to No. 72 Yale on Friday before hosting a pair of matches on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will travel to No. 72 Yale to start the weekend before a pair of home matches on Sunday at the Courts at St. John's starting at 10 a.m.
Earlier in the week, the Red Storm notched its second conference victory of the season, a 7-0 sweep of Villanova at the Courts at St. John's. The Red Storm were dominant from the beginning winning the first two doubles matches to clinch the point. Sergio Molina notched his team-high 12th singles win. Three Johnnies each finished the day with a singles and doubles win.
Diogo Marques was named the BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week following his 2-0 weekend. He dropped just one game in a straight set victory against Georgetown on Friday. On Sunday, he needed three sets to knock off Brown's top singles player.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The duo of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their six wins are the most on the team. Giuseppe De Camelis touts a combined 8-0 record in doubles play across four different partners. Carl Gustafsson totals a team-high 10 wins paired with five losses across five partners. Four additional pairings have at least three wins apiece. De Camelis accounts for the two of the pairs as he is 3-0 teamed up with each Molina, and Anton Stendal.
In singles play, four Johnnies have reached double-digits win totals. New Mexico transfer Molina paces the team with 12 victories. Gustafsson and Kaneda each have 11 wins for the second-most on the squad, and Nishant Dabas has added 10 victories.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated a 79-20 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
No. 72 Yale has not played in the last 11 days since playing four matches in a week span. The Bulldogs went 2-2 in their last four picking up wins over Santa Clara and Cal Poly after dropping to UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.
The Red Storm are 10-5 in the all-time series with the Bulldogs. The Johnnies have won the last two meeting with Yale, both of them in New Haven. Last spring, St. John's was victorious 5-2 in Connecticut.
St. Francis Brooklyn will play a doubleheader on Saturday against St. Thomas Aquinas and Lafayette before their match against the Red Storm on Sunday. The Terriers enter the weekend 5-10 and have won their last four contests. Last weekend, the squad's lone match was a 4-3 victory at Farleigh Dickinson.
The Johnnies have won both past meetings with the Terriers, both via the sweep. The Red Storm notched a 4-0 sweep in February of 2022.
Queens College had its seven-match win streak snapped last Friday against St. Thomas Aquinas. The Knights enter the weekend 10-3 overall and will play a pair of matches on Thursday and Saturday before dueling with the Red Storm on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm are 3-0 against the Knights all-time in the series. Last spring the Johnnies swept Queens College, 7-0.
Next week, St. John's will travel to Marquette for its lone match of the week on Friday night at 7 p.m. Friday's match will conclude the BIG EAST slate for the Johnnies.
