St. John’s Falls to Seton Hall in Series Opener, 5-0

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's softball team fell to Seton Hall 5-0 in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field.
Seton Hall (18-11, 7-3 BIG EAST) scored one run in each of the first five innings against the Red Storm (13-15, 4-3 BIG EAST).
Anese Thompson reached in all three of her plate appearances, going 1-for-1 with a single and a pair of walks.
The Johnnies had their best scoring chance in the first inning after back-to-back singles by Amy Mallah and Thompson with two outs. The Pirates hurler retired the next batter to end the frame.
The Pirates struck first scoring one in the first inning. The second batter of the frame, Taylor Hill, launched a ball over the high wall in left to put the Pirates on the board first.
Seton Hall had a lot of traffic on the base paths in the second inning but starter Hannah Mearns limited the Pirates to just one run on a RBI single.\
Olivia Gilbert notched a pair of RBI-doubles to contribute to the Pirates three insurance runs.
Right-hander Kelsey Carr held the Johnnies to three hits and five base runners in the contest. She retired the side in seventh inning to clinch the 5-0 victory for the Pirates.
Due to expected rain, tomorrow's start time as been pushed back to 1 p.m. for the second game of the three-game series.
