The Red Storm uses 16-hit outing to down the Pride on Wednesday
Blake Mayberry tallied three runs while going 3-for-5 at the dish, marking his second multi-hit game with the Red Storm (7-4). Third baseman Marty Higgins also posted a three-hit performance at the Jack, totaling four RBIs and a run scored on the afternoon.
Sophomore Jace Jeremiah reached base four times on Wednesday, going 2-for-3 with a pair of walks while adding an RBI and a run scored. Kevin Michaels chipped in two tallies of his own, also going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
David Glancy, Aaron Mann and Paul Orbon rounded out those with multiple hits, recording two apiece.
Eight of nine Johnnies crossed home plate on Wednesday while three of the team's 16 hits were of the extra-base variety.
After a two-run first inning from Hofstra (3-8), the Johnnies rattled off three-straight singles to start the second, capped off by an RBI base knock by Higgins that plated Mann. Jeremiah knotted the game at two after a sacrifice bunt up the first base side brought Mayberry in from third.
The Johnnies continued to put on the pressure, loading the bases to open the bottom of the third before a Higgins single to left brought Michaels in from third for a 3-2 edge, securing a lead they would not relinquish.
Starter Mario Pesca settled in after the opening frame, allowing just one baserunner in the second, facing the minimum in the third after forcing Hofstra's Jake Liberatore to ground into a 6-3 double play and retiring the side in order in the fourth.
In the home half of the fourth frame, the Red Storm tagged the Pride with two more runs on a Michaels RBI sacrifice fly and Glancy scoring on a wild pitch for a three-run edge, 5-2.
Hofstra's Will Kennedy hit an RBI single in the fifth to bring the Pride within two, 5-3, but Ben Adams came on with two outs and picked up a crucial strikeout to end the threat. After the Red Storm posted a three-run sixth behind an RBI double from Orbon and a one-run single by Glancy for an 8-3 lead, the junior lefty tossed a scoreless sixth to complete his 1.1-inning outing.
Both teams were held off the board until the Pride capitalized on back-to-back wild pitches, scoring twice in the eighth frame to cut its deficit to three, 8-5.
Higgins delivered the biggest blow of the afternoon with a two-run triple, plating Mayberry and Michaels for a 10-5 advantage. The Johnnies' third baseman came around to score on the next pitch as Jeremiah smacked a sac fly to right for the 11th run of the game.
Hofstra tacked on two more in the ninth before Nick Cirelli came on and shut the door, earning his second save of the year.
The Johnnies return to Jack Kaiser Stadium this weekend, squaring off with UAlbany in a three-game series beginning on Friday at 3 p.m.
