Men’s Tennis Readies for Penultimate Regular Season Match at Monmouth

The Red Storm finished its BIG EAST Slate 3-0
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will compete in its penultimate contest of the spring season with a road match against Monmouth set for a 2 p.m. first serve and will held at the Outdoor Tennis Complex.
Diogo Marques earned his second BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week selection in three weeks on Monday. The Setubal, Portugal native notched a 6-4, 6-4, victory against Marquette's top player in his lone match of the week. On the season, Marques is 8-3 and sported a perfect 3-0 record in all three conference matches.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The tandem of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their six wins by a duo are the most on the team. Carl Gustafsson totals a team-high 11 wins paired with five losses across five partners. Kaneda's ten wins and Groves nine total doubles wins are second and third on the team, respectively. Giuseppe De Camelis touts a combined 8-1 record in doubles play across four different partners.
In singles play, four Johnnies have reached double-digit win totals. New Mexico transfer Molina paces the team with 13 victories. Gustafsson and Kaneda each have 12 wins for the second-most on the squad, and Nishant Dabas has added 11 victories.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated an 81-21 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Monmouth touts a 14-4 record entering Wednesday's match. The Hawks are currently on an eight-match winning streak. Last week, Monmouth defeated Bryant, Wagner and Hofstra in its 3-0 week. The Hawks will conclude their regular season slate with three more matches before the CAA Tournament which is scheduled to start on April 27.
The Hawks have won the last two meetings with the Red Storm and own a 2-1 record against the Johnnies. Monmouth won 4-3 in the spring of 2021 against St. John's in Queens.
St. John's will conclude the regular season portion of its schedule on Sunday with a home match against Fordham. The contest is scheduled to be held at the Courts at St. John's with doubles play starting at 1 p.m. Before the match, a "Senior Day" presentation will be held to recognize the three seniors graduating the program.
