Red Storm Welcomes Villanova for Crucial Three-Game BIG EAST Series

The Red Storm are two spots behind the Wildcats in the conference standings
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will host Villanova for a three-game BIG EAST series for crucial standing within the conference.
Currently the Wildcats rank fourth in the conference just two spots ahead of the Red Storm. With six teams earning a bid to the BIG EAST Tournament, the Johnnies find themselves in a crucial situation to be able to move up in the standings with a series win.
Live stats will be provided by StatBroadcast the entire series. The series will be covered on an audio only stream.
There will be a lot of action going on this weekend at Red Storm Field. On Friday, the first 200 arriving students will receive a pair of St. John's sunglasses. Saturday is jam-packed with 2000's theme night. Fans will receive a free St. John's fanny pack and scrunchie. Also, the first 100 fans will be able to pick up a Boardroom x St. John's tote bag! Kids are also able to grab a fidget spinner or a St. John's picture frame and crayons. With both baseball and lacrosse playing as well, four sponsors will be activating between Belson and Jack Kaiser Stadium.
St. John's returned to the win column with a 4-1 victory over the Rams of Fordham on a Wednesday afternoon tilt in Queens. The Red Storm got on the board first, with a two-RBI single by Anese Thompson. Natalie Casto lengthened the lead to 3-1 on an RBI-double to plate Cassidy Stouffer. The Red Storm tacked on an insurance run in the sixth and Loreley Francia pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to close out the Rams and notch her fourth complete game.
London Jarrard has been the Queen of Doubles this season and ranks seventh in the nation with 14 total doubles and third in doubles per game (.42). The sophomore is establishing herself as a top player not only in the BIG EAST but nationally, as well. The Carlsbad, Calif. native ranks in the top 50 in seven categories nationally, and in the top three of the conference in eight statistical categories.
Thompson has been on fire lately reaching base in 13 straight games dating back to March 22 against Stony Brook. During the streak she is hitting .462 with a .645 on-base percentage. She has knocked 12 hits, and drawn 14 walks, while driving in eight Johnnies.
Bob Guerriero is in his fifth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a 2017 St. John's graduate, is in her fourth season as an assistant coach while Rizzi, a 2020 graduate, is in her second season as a coach as a part of the Red Storm program.
Villanova has a busy week playing five games in a row from Wednesday to Sunday. The Wildcats kicked off the week with a 10-3 defeat of Drexel, before heading to Hofstra on Thursday. Last weekend the Wildcats knocked Butler out of the top spot in the conference taking two of three from the Bulldogs.
Kat Gallant is dominating in the circle for the Wildcats. She leads the staff with nine wins, striking out 59 and holds a 2.46 ERA. Tess Cites and Ally Jones lead the top of the order for the Wildcats batting .331 and .330, respectively. Cites leads the team with 24 RBIs and seven stolen bases. Ryan Henry leads the Wildcats with six home runs, and a .578 slugging percentage.
Head Coach Bridget Orchard is in her fifth season at the helm for the Wildcats and her 26th as a collegiate head coach.
Villanova leads the all-time series with St. John's, 49-38. The Wildcats have bested the Johnnies at Red Storm Field winning 12 of 23 matchups. Last spring, Villanova swept the series against St. John's in Pennsylvania.
The Red Storm will travel to Fairfield next Wednesday afternoon before its final BIG EAST home series against Georgetown starting on Friday.
