Men’s Tennis Gears Up for Regular Season Finale

The Red Storm will begin its chase for a BIG EAST Title on Thursday in Cayce, S.C.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will conclude its regular season slate on Sunday afternoon with a matinee match hosting Fordham at 1 p.m. at the Courts at St. John's.

Before Sunday's match, the four seniors in their final year of the program will be recognized in a "Senior Day" presentation. Graduate students Roger Rogowski and Diogo Marques and seniors Giuseppe De Camelis and Axel Vila Antuna.
The Red Storm won a midweek tilt at Monmouth, 4-2. Three Johnnies won a pair of matches on the day. The Johnnies won the doubles point by taking two of the three doubles contest to start the day. In singles play, St. John's won three out of the five finished matches to clinch the point and its 16th victory.
Marques earned his second BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week selection in three weeks on Monday. The Setubal, Portugal native notched a 6-4, 6-4, victory against Marquette's top player in his lone match of the week. On the season, Marques is 8-3 and sported a perfect 3-0 record in all three conference matches.
In doubles play, the Johnnies have experimented with 17 different pairings this season. The tandem of Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda have played the most matches together and their six wins by a duo are the most on the team. Carl Gustafsson totals a team-high 11 wins paired with six losses across five partners. Kaneda's ten wins ranks makes him the one of two Johnnies with double-digit win totals in singles and doubles play. De Camelis touts a combined 9-1 record in doubles play across four different partners.
In singles play, four Johnnies have reached double-digit win totals. New Mexico transfer Sergio Molina paces the team with 14 victories. Gustafsson and Kaneda each have 12 wins for the second-most on the squad, and Nishant Dabas has added 11 victories.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish is in his fifth season at the helm of the program. During his time with the Johnnies he has accumulated an 82-21 record. He has guided the Red Storm to three consecutive BIG EAST Championships. The Johnnies won the BIG EAST Title and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016 in his first season in Queens.
Fordham enters the weekend 7-10 on the season. The Rams open their weekend with a Saturday afternoon match against Saint Joseph's University. Fordham will close its regular season slate next Tuesday at Eastern Florida State College. Last week the rams notched a pair of victories against Holy Cross and Rider.
The Red Storm are 6-0 against the Rams, including 5-0 in home matches. Last Spring the Johnnies swept Fordham, 4-0,the sixth sweep in the all-time series.
