Men’s Tennis Concludes Regular Season with 6-1 Senior Day Victory Over Fordham

The Red Storm will await their seeding for the BIG EAST Championships set to be released on Monday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team wrapped up its regular season slate with a 6-1 defeat of Fordham on Senior Day at the Courts at St. John's on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm won their 17th match of the season, for the second consecutive season. The Johnnies finished their regular season BIG EAST slate last week, 3-0. St. John's is 17-5 on the year heading into next week's BIG EAST Championships.
Before Sunday's match, the four individuals in their final year of the program were recognized in a "Senior Day" presentation. Graduate students Roger Rogowski and Diogo Marques and seniors Giuseppe De Camelis and Axel Vila Antuna were honored.
The Johnnies notched the doubles point by taking two out of the three doubles contests, all of which were 6-4 decisions. Nishant Dabas and Carl Gustafsson teamed up for a 6-4 defeat of Giorgio Soemarno and Toi Kobayashi in the second slot. The Red Storm won its second doubles match with a 6-4 victory by Rogowski and De Camelis over Dhillon Virdee-Oakle and Sampras Rakotondrain.
In singles play, the Johnnies won five matches to clinch the 6-1 victory. Three of the Red Storm doubles winners also won their singles match. Gustafsson knocked off Dhillon Virdie-Oakley in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. De Camelis also won in straight sets with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Nicholas Kanazirev in the No. 3 slot. Ryota Kaneda picked up his first win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1, win in the fourth court against John Mascone. Dabas and Rogowski each needed three sets to claim their respective victories. Dabas dropped the first set, 4-6, before stringing together a pair of wins, 7-5, 10-3, over Kobayashi. Rogowski notched his second singles victory of the year defeating Rakotondrain, 6-1, 6-7, 10-6.
St. John's will gear up for a title chase at the BIG EAST Championships. The event is set to open on Thursday, with the finals scheduled for April 23. The entire event will be held in Cayce, S.C. at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center.
