Peicheng Chen logs team-best T-11th place finish against top competition
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va.- The St. John's men's golf team ended its regular season slate on Tuesday afternoon recording a seventh place finish at the Mountaineer Invitational.
The Red Storm registered a stellar third round as a group to finish in seventh in a competitive 13-team field. The Johnnies shot 43-over as a team after 54 holes in difficult conditions at the Pete Dye Golf Club.
After finishing up the final few holes of the second round this morning, St. John's carded a plus-7 score as a team in the final round, the fourth best of the day.
The Red Storm led the entire field with the best stroke average on par-5's shooting 4.93 and 4-under.
Once again it was Peicheng Chen that led the group finishing a team-best 11th place. After finishing 1-under and in third place after the opening round, the sophomore bounced back from a tough second round to shoot 1-over, 73, in his final 18 holes. The Beijing native led all players with 11 birdies throughout the competition.
Highlighted by a hole-in-one, Jack Simon had a strong outing for the Red Storm placing inside the top-15. In the second round, the graduate student fired an even par, 72, and tallied his first ace of the season on the par-3 seventh hole. The Sparta, N.J., native closed out at plus-8.
After a difficult first round, Tyler Gerbavsits shot a combined 1-over on the last 36 holes to finish plus-11 and check in tied for 26th.
Gage Wolfle (-1) and Ryan Rittberger (+2) each tallied their best rounds of the event on Wednesday. Brendan Smith recorded an eagle on the eighth hole, one of just 10 players to do so.
The Red Storm will now shift its focus to the BIG EAST Championships presented by JEEP on April 28-30 at Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club in Hardeeville, S.C.
