St. John’s Gears Up for Metropolitan Outdoor Championships and Temple Invite

Red Storm to split up for first time this outdoor season
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's track and field team will compete in split-team action this weekend as one part of the squad will compete in the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships while the other portion will travel to Philadelphia for the Temple Invite.
Jamora Alves and Samantha Morillo-Martinez will be heading to The Temple Invite on Friday starting at 5:15 p.m. Despite not competing at The Big Hurt last weekend, Alves holds the top marks in the discus (52.84m) and shot put throws (14.78m) in the BIG EAST. Alves' record-setting discus toss is good for 30th nationally. Morillo-Martinez ranks second in the league in the shot put with a heave of 14.33 meters.
Several top Red Storm runners will make the trip to the City of Brotherly Love on Friday. Tatyana McKenzie leads the conference in the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter dashes. Delicia Bent ranks third in the BIG EAST in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.88, and Chinenye Onuorah boasts a third-place mark in the 200-meter race with a time of 24.63. The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay team paces the BIG EAST with a mark of 46.11.
In the hurdles, Zamira Ysaac sits fourth in the league in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.10 and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.09. Claire Cushing boasts a top-10 time in the conference in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:15.27, a personal best in the event, and will compete in the 800-meter run.
Alves and Morilo-Martinez will also join the group of throwers heading to Randall's Island for the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships which being on Friday. Ismini Andreou sits third in the conference in the hammer throw with a launch of 47.86 meters. Alves and Desiree Pagan will make their respective season debuts in the javelin throw at Icahn Stadium.
