St. John’s Closes Regular Season Home Slate Against Stony Brook

The Red Storm will honor a pair of seniors after the contest
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team will host Stony Brook in its final non-conference tilt of the season on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field at 3 p.m.
St. John's will hold a "Senior Day" presentation to honor seniors Amy Mallah and Natalie Alheidt after the conclusion of the contest.

Last week, the Johnnies only played three of its five scheduled games due to massive weekend rains. The Red Storm dropped to Manhattan before a doubleheader sweep over Sacred Heart. The Johnnies edged the Pioneers in the first game, 7-4. After closing out the last two innings of the first contest, Loreley Francia notched her fifth complete game in the final game of the doubleheader. The Red Storm bats were alive with an 11-0 victory.
Katie Whittaker broke the school record for hit by pitches after logging three against Sacred Heart on Thursday to notch her 13th of the year. She passed a trio of Johnnies who totaled 11.
Jess Bianco earned her first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection after her seven stolen base performance in Thursday's doubleheader against Sacred Heart brought her total to 35 on the year. Her total ranks sixth in the nation, and leads all freshmen. She is in need of 11 more swiped bags to tie Donna Dosanjos' 46-spot in 1990.
Last week, the team surpassed two new single-season records. With help from Whittaker, the squad has crushed the previous mark of 38 HBP in a season (2009), currently tallying 51. Bianco has guided the team to a new single-season high in stolen bases, 87 beating the previous mark of 78 in 1990.
Head Coach Bob Guerriero is in his fifth year as head coach of the St. John's Softball team and is assisted by Grace Kramer and Marissa Rizzi. Kramer, a 2017 St. John's graduate, is in her fourth season as an assistant coach while Rizzi, a 2020 graduate, is in her second season as a coach as a part of the Red Storm program.
Stony Brook enjoyed a 3-1 slate last week. The Seawolves knocked off Fordham in a midweek tilt and took two of three from Towson in their CAA series. The Seawolves are one game behind Monmouth in the CAA for the eighth seed.
Alyssa Costello has been consistent for the Seawolves leading with a .357 average, 31 RBIs, and a .612 slugging percentage. Alicia Orsaro has been a fixture in the lineup starting all 46 games hitting .333, leading the team with 10 doubles and swiping a team-high nine bags. Mia Haynes has logged 137 innings in the circle, notching a team-high 86 punch-outs and 13 wins. She has completed 13 games and recorded four shutouts.
Head Coach Megan T. Bryant is in her 23rd season at the helm of the program. She has amassed 623 wins, and 14 postseason appearances. Bryant has been named America East Coach of the Year three times during her time with the Seawolves.
The Red Storm leads the Seawolves, 9-6 in the all-time series. Earlier in the season, the Seawolves hosted the Red Storm for an extra-inning battle. The Johnnies were victorious, 2-0 in nine innings.
This weekend, the Red Storm will travel to Omaha for a three-game series at Creighton for a chance to clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.
