Red Storm has won three of its last four games heading into the weekend slate
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team will look to build on its back-to-back victories over Columbia and Iona this weekend as it welcomes Villanova to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a three-game series, beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
Saturday's contest is also slated for 6 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. showdown on Sunday. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN3 with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's (22-21) is coming off consecutive midweek wins, downing the Lions, 7-5, and dominating the Gaels, 13-3, in seven innings. The Red Storm tamed Columbia on the road for the first time since its 2-1 victory on March 24, 2009, behind a three-RBI day from Marty Higgins. The Johnnies put its foot on the gas pedal against Iona, forcing the newly-implemented 10-run rule with a seven-inning affair capped off by Jace Jeremiah driving in two of his career-high four tallies on the game-winning single in the seventh.
Winning three of its last four games, the Red Storm is slashing .303/.411/.508 as a team with 7.8 runs per game.
Graduate student Aaron Mann continues to pace the BIG EAST with a .377 batting average, sitting inside the top 100 in the nation. The Johnnies' first baseman has also logged 20 multi-hit games this season while ranking second in conference with 60 base knocks.
Since the start of conference play against UConn on April 6, David Glancy has reached base safely in 15 straight games. Over that span, the Johnnies' outfielder has accumulated 20 hits, 11 for extra bases, with a team-best 16 runs scored to go with 11 RBIs.
The Red Storm will square off with Villanova for the 94th time in program history on Friday, holding a 60-33 overall record over the Wildcats. The Johnnies took the series finale, 11-8, in Pennsylvania last season after dropping their first two contests. The reliever trio of Ben Adams, Tim Cunningham and Chuck Sanzio combined to allow just one run on six hits with six strikeouts across 6.1 innings of work in the win. Nick Cirelli, Kevin Michaels and Jackson Tucker all tallied two hits on the day while former Johnnie David Williams logged three RBIs and three runs scored.
Villanova (11-31, 6-9 BIG EAST) has fallen in six of its last seven games with its lone win coming against Wagner, 5-4, on April 25.
Craig Larsen will look to continue his success this season after joining the Wildcats from Penn. Slashing .314/.370/.488, the graduate student paces the team with 54 hits, 11 doubles, 33 RBIs and 29 runs scored.
Devin Rivera and Cade Udell are expected to toe the slab for Villanova this weekend. Rivera has factored a decision in eight of his 11 starts (2-6) this season while the opposition has hit .297 against him. Udell is in search of his first win in 2023, going 0-6 despite holding the opposing lineup to a .186 batting average.
Head Coach Kevin Mulvey is in his seventh season with the Wildcats, sitting four wins away from 100 in his Villanova career (96).
