Red Storm opens its season at Stony Brook for the second straight year

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team will open its 2023 campaign on Saturday at Stony Brook, N.Y. for the Stony Brook Season Opener meet. The 4K race will start at 11:15 a.m.

St. John's returned a number of student-athletes from 2022, including Team MVP Claire Cushing. Last season, the Brookville, Ontario native recorded two top-10 finishes, which included fourth at the Metropolitan Championships. In addition to Cushing, the program brings back Hannah Huleatt, Jenna D'Onofino, Gabriella Caronio, Leilani Robinson and Ezgi Yasar. Graduate Student Nia Holden and sophomore Blessing Assoumany joined the squad for the 2023 campaign.

The Red Storm also added three freshmen to their roster: Ana Dobsa, Maddie Kelso-Heap and Cristina Stanescu.

This marks the second straight year that the Red Storm will open its season at Stony Brook. The Johnnies took fourth place at the meet last season.

The 2023 squad will face off against Columbia, Fordham, LIU, Quinnipiac, Wagner and home team, Stony Brook to kick off the season.

Head Coach Elliott Blount enters his third season at the helm of the Red Storm. Last season, Blount led the Johnnies to three top-five finishes including a second-place team finish at the Metropolitan Championships.
