Red Storm will put its undefeated record on the line against the Big Red
Following three victories this past week to start the season, the St. John's men's tennis team will visit Cornell on Sunday in Ithaca, N.Y. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Reiss Tennis Center.
"The team is very much looking forward to traveling and playing Cornell," said Head Coach Dillon Pottish. "They are one of the top teams in the country so it will give us a good gauge on where we stand early in the season."
The Red Storm (3-0) began 2024 dual-match play in dominating fashion, taking down Bryant 6-1 in its season opener on Tuesday. The Red Storm followed up the win with sweeps of Quinnipiac, 7-0, on Wednesday and LIU, 7-0, on Thursday.
2023 First Team All-BIG EAST Selection Carl Gustavsson picked up right where he left off a season ago, winning all six of his matches over the team's first three contests. The junior from Sweden won two matches in doubles play with Leonardo Mileikowsky, while also earning a victory with Martin Bugaj. Gustavsson also went 3-0 in singles play, including picking up a win on the No. 1 court against LIU.
Mileikowsky (6-0), Ryota Kaneda (3-0), Ignacio Vinas (3-0) and Leon Petko (3-0) all had undefeated weeks to the season for the Johnnies.
Cornell (0-0) begins its season with a doubleheader on Saturday against Niagara and Buffalo. The Big Red went 18-7 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament's Second Round. Cornell is led by junior Radu Papoe who tallied a 16-2 dual-match record a season ago and was unanimously named to the All-Ivy League First Team.
Following the matchup in Ithaca, St. John's will return to Queens for a Feb. 1 meeting with Marist at the USTA National Tennis Center.
