St. John’s Falls Short Against Cornell, 6-1

Carl Gustavsson improved to 4-0 in singles play in the loss
The St. John's men's tennis team dropped its first match of 2024 on Sunday, falling 6-1 against Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Red Storm dropped to 3-1 on the season after Sunday's loss.
Cornell claimed the team doubles point after winning the first two matches of doubles play. Francisco Bascón and Leonardo Mileikowsky were came up short against Adit Sinha and Nathan Mao on the No. 1 doubles court, 6-4, while Martin Bugaj and Carl Gustavsson fell to Samuel Paquette and Petar Teodorovic, 6-4.
Gustavsson picked up the lone point on the day for the Red Storm, defeating Bradley Paliska on the No. 3 singles court, 6-3, 6-4. With the win, the Stockholm, Sweden, native improved to 4-0 in singles play this season. On the No. 1 court, Bascón won the first set in convincing fashion against Radu Papoe but would ultimately end up dropping the winner-take-all third set, 10-5.
Cornell improved to 3-0 on the season, winning its third match in the last two days.
The Red Storm will return home on Thursday, Feb. 1 against Marist. First serve at the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 1 p.m.
