St. John’s Returns Home to Face Georgetown on Sunday

Red Storm captured the first-ever double-overtime victory at DePaul
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team returns home after a pair of overtime contest on the road to face Georgetown at Carnesecca Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The game will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Drew Casey and Edona Thaqi on the call from Queens.
St. John's will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Sunday with a pre-game clinic in Taffner Field House. All children grades K-6 are invited to attend the clinic hosted by our St. John's women's athletic programs from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and all participants will receive a free t-shirt. The Red Storm are coming off an extraordinary double-overtime victory at DePaul on Thursday night prevailing 83-77 after two extra periods. It marked the first double-overtime victory in program history and the first time since 2017 the Johnnies have played consecutive overtime games.
83 points was the most the Red Storm have scored since Feb. 6, 2022 during a 96-62 victory against Xavier at the Cintas Center.
Unique Drake strung together one of the most prolific scoring performances in St. John's women's basketball history at Wintrust Arena. The redshirt senior went for 36 points, which was the most by a Red Storm player since Tawana Jackson tallied 36 against Boston College on Feb. 1, 1995. Drake's career-best point total ranks tied for third all-time as she made a career-high field 12 goals and nailed six 3-pointers.
The Johnnies grabbed 58 rebounds on Thursday night, the program's most since it hauled in 62 against Marquette on Feb. 13, 2015. Three players- Tara Daye, Phoenix Gedeon and Jillian Archer tallied nine or more rebounds in the winning effort. Archer pulled down a team-high 11 boards and added 16 points for her sixth double-double of the season.
Archer has been dominant in the paint this season recording 10.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. The graduate student matched her career-high in blocks for the fourth time in seven games against the Blue Demons recording four swats, she ranks fourth in the BIG EAST.
The Johnnies have started 6-3 in conference play for the second consecutive year and currently sit in third place in the BIG EAST standings. St. John's has won 10 of its last 14 games.
Georgetown arrives with a 14-5 record on the year and a 4-4 mark in league competition. The Hoyas are coming off a narrow home loss to No. 21/20 Creighton, 77-72, on Wednesday night. Brianna Scott led the charge with 17 points and seven boards in the narrow shortcoming at McDonough Arena.
Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Darnell Haney, the Hoyas have been stout defensively ranking first in the BIG EAST and 13th in NCAA Division I allowing just 54.1 points per contest. Georgetown's opponents are shooting 36.6 percent from field goal this season.
On the offensive end of the floor, 2023 All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection Kelsey Ransom leads the way for the Hoyas averaging 14.9 points per game. Ransom ranks top-5 in the league in steals averaging 2.4 per outing.
The two founding member institutions of the BIG EAST will meet on the hardwood in women's hoops for the 73rd time during Sunday's matinee. St. John's leads the all-time series, 42-30 and has captured seven of the last eight meetings. The Johnnies are 22-12 all-time at home against the Hoyas.
Following Sunday's meeting, St. John's will welcome Xavier on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. tip-off at Carnesecca Arena.
