NEW YORK – The St. John's track and field team enjoyed a record-breaking weekend at the Dr. Sander Invitational on Friday and Saturday inside The Armory in Manhattan, N.Y.
The Red Storm shattered two program records on Friday, as Claire Cushing and Meghan Ladd became the new record holders in the indoor 5000-meter and the indoor pole vault, respectively. Additionally, the Johnnies claimed six top-five results at Columbia's indoor home meet.
Cushing continued her dominant season on Friday, as she broke the long-standing indoor 5000-meter record. The graduate student paced the 5K race in 17:02.94 which shattered Jeanne Erkmann's previous time of 17:20.46 by almost 18 seconds from the 1985 Indoor BIG EAST Championships.
Ladd broke teammate Berit Friedenbach's indoor pole vault record of 3.35 meters from last year's indoor BIG EAST Championship. The Folsom, Calif. native broke the record with a launch of 3.75 meters, improving on Friedenbach's effort by .40 meters.
In the 200-meter run, Delicia Bent sprinted her way to a fourth-place effort with a final time of 24.29. Amarachukwu Obi made her Red Storm debut in the 200-meters, posting a finishing 24.53. The Alabama transfer's effort was good enough for sixth place in the event.
Nora Haugen added to the sprinter's successful weekend at The Armory, finishing the 400-meter race in 56.30 seconds, earning fourth place overall. In the 60-meter dash, Brooklyn Chestnut registered a fifth-place finish which secured her third straight top-five finish in the event to start the season. The senior paced the race in 7.63 seconds.
The Johnnies continued to impress in the throw events throughout the two-day meet, as Jamora Alves clinched third place in the shot put with a toss of 14.51 meters. The sophomore's season-best throw was good enough to claim third in the category.
Alves continued her impressive showing in the weight throw, as she recorded a personal-best toss of 15.25 meters. Ismini Andreou produced a heave of 16.07 meters for a 14th-place effort in the weight throw.
St. John's impressed in the 4x400-meter relay, earning its third top-three finish in the event for the third straight meet. The Johnnies' relay team of Dolce McPherson, Obi, Nia Holden and Chinenye Onuorah finished in 3:45.12 to notch a third-place effort.
The Red Storm will return to action at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. next Friday, Feb. 2, where they will take part in the annual Metropolitan Indoor Championships.
