The meet marks the Red Storm’s third contest at Ocean Breeze this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will head back to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. on Friday for the annual Metropolitan Indoor Championships. The local meet will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Johnnies have historically dominated at the Metropolitan Indoor Championships, coming in second place or better in every meet since 2010. Last season, the program grabbed the championship by racking up 155 points, 14 more than second-place Columbia.
The Red Storm will race at Ocean Breeze for the third time in its first four games to open the season. The squad's sole meet outside of Staten Island was last week inside The Armory in Manhattan for Columbia's Dr. Sander Invitational.
St. John's has competed well in its first two meets at Ocean Breeze this season, winning four events and notching 13 top-3 finishes.
The Red Storm enjoyed a record-breaking weekend a week ago at The Armory in the Dr. Sander Invitational. Claire Cushing and Meghan Ladd became the new program record holders in the indoor 5,000-meter and the indoor pole vault events, respectively.
Cushing shattered the 5,000-meter record last Friday by pacing the race in 17:02.94. The graduate student's time improved on Jeanne Erkmann's of 17:20.46 by almost 18 seconds from the 1985 Indoor BIG EAST Championships.
Ladd set a program record in the indoor pole vault event with a launch of 3.75 meters at The Armory. The Folsom, Calif., native broke teammate Berit Friedenbach's previous leap of 3.35 meters from last year's indoor BIG EAST Championship by .40 meters.
In the throws, Jamora Alves continued to impress, securing third place in the shot put with a heave of 14.51 meters. The sophomore then went on to record a personal best toss of 15.25 in the weight throw event.
Delicia Bent and Brooklyn Chestnut registered strong showings in the 200-meter and the 60-meter dash at Columbia's home meet. Bent finished the 200-meter in 29.29 seconds, which was good for a fourth-place effort. Chestnut sprinted to a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds. The senior has clinched top-5 finishes in the 60-meter dash in all three of the Red Storm's indoor meets this season.
