Johnnies will take on the Broncs for the first time in program history
The St. John's women's tennis team will open its 2024 dual-match schedule on Wednesday against Rider at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
Wednesday's matchup will mark the first meeting in program history between the Red Storm and the Broncos.
St. John's has won its home opener each year during Coach Leo's tenure, dating back to the 2015-2016 season.
The Johnnies are led by returning graduate students Mouna Bouzgarrou and Willa Bay Breunich. Bouzgarrou went 13-5 in singles play last season and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Breunich had a 9-5 singles record in 2023 and won nine doubles matches as well.
Following a successful fall, Noemi Babikova will make her dual-match debut for St. John's. The freshman won 12 matches between singles and doubles play throughout fall competition. Arina Gumerova, Alicia Gómez and Nicoline Sartz-Lunde are also set to appear in dual-match play for the first time with the Red Storm.
The Broncs come to Queens having failed to pick up a point in each of its first three matches, falling to Drexel, Army and Sacred Heart throughout opening week of the spring season. Rider returns six letterwinners from a squad that went 4-15 in 2023.
