The Red Storm earned a marquee win on Wednesday night over No. 19/20 Marquette, 57-56, at Carnesecca Arena. The win marked the third victory over a top-20 opponent in the last two seasons for the Johnnies.
Wednesday night's BIG EAST battle with the Golden Eagles was neck-and-neck and went down to the wire. The contest featured 14 ties and seven lead changes and an eventual game-winner from Unique Drake, who buried a step-back jumper with 1:21 to play.
The Red Storm came up with three crucial defensive stops down the stretch including an emphatic stuff from Jillian Archer with 0:13 remaining to seal the victory and move to 2-1 in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm held Marquette, who was averaging 79.6 points per game coming in to just a season-low 56 and forced it into 23 turnovers. The Golden Eagles were held scoreless for the final 2:51 of the game.
Drake logged an impeccable performance on Wednesday finishing with 24 points, her seventh 20-plus point game of the season. The redshirt senior already surpassed her highest personal-best single-season point total tallying 300 just 15 games in. The Columbia, S.C., native was clutch down the stretch scoring the team's final nine points and the final five of the game to complete the comeback after trailing by eight late in the third quarter.
The guard continues to shoot the lights out from beyond-the-arc and ranks 10th in NCAA Division I with 43 triples made. Drake is shooting at a 43.9 percent clip and has made three or more 3-pointers in eight games this season.
The Red Storm have turned a corner following the Thanksgiving Break, winning six of its last eight games and hold an 8-7 record on the year. The Red Storm tallied its third game this season with double-digit steals on Wednesday. Ber'Nyah Mayo led the charge with four swipes.
The two BIG EAST foes will meet on the hardwood for the 79th time on Saturday night. The Johnnies lead the all-time series dating back to 1978, 46-32. St. John's holds a 23-13 record on the road in Providence.
The series has been tightly contested in recent years. The Johnnies have won four of the last five meetings with each of those contests decided by eight points or less.
