Red Storm have won 10 of the last 12 against the Wildcats
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's soccer team will get back on the pitch after a week break when it ventures to Villanova for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
The BIG EAST contest from Higgins Soccer Complex will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Matt Janus on the call from the Keystone State.
The Red Storm will look to bounce back after a pair of setbacks against Marquette and No. 20 Georgetown. The Johnnies quickly equalized at home courtesy of a strike from Jailene DeJesus before the Golden Eagles netted the eventual game-winner in the 32ndminute, 2-1, on Oct. 3. That following Sunday in the nation's capital on Oct. 6, the squad hung with the nationally-ranked Hoyas for 30 minutes before the home side logged its first tally in the 32nd minute. St. John's responded with some glaring chances at the end of the first half before Georgetown took control in the latter 45 minutes to earn a 3-0 victory at Shaw Field.
The Red Storm have had success when getting out to a strong start. On the year, the squad is 5-0-2 when scoring first and hold that same mark when either leading or tied at the halftime break.
DeJesus continues to strengthen her form as the season rolls on. After not logging a point over the first six matches, the midfielder now leads the team with 12 on the year recording five goals and two assists over her last seven outings. Halfway through league play, the senior ranks third in the BIG EAST with seven points adding three goals and an assist against conference opponents.
At goalkeeper, the Johnnies continue to split time between the pipes with Kayla Bower and Malene Nielsen each playing a half. Over the last two matches, Bower has tallied four stops matching a career-best.
Villanova comes into the match with a 4-5-3 overall record and sits in the middle of the BIG EAST standings with a 1-1-2 mark in league competition. The Wildcats will play their first game in 10 days on Sunday drawing DePaul at home on Oct. 3, 1-1. Villanova converted a penalty kick for the third times this season before the Blue Demons equalized in the 63rd minute.
Wildcats goaltender Hannah Dickinson leads the BIG EAST in total saves (58) and saves per game (4.8). The junior has guided the squad to four shutout efforts this season.
The two sides have a long-standing even series tied at 14-14-4 as they prepare for the 33rd all-time meeting. In recent history, the Johnnies hold a 3-1-1 record over the last five meetings and have come out victorious in 10 of the last 12 contests between the league foes.
In last year's tilt, the Red Storm captured a 2-0 win at Belson Stadium over Villanova on Oct. 1, 2023. DeJesus and Lauryn Tran tallied the goals in the contest as St. John's held its opponents to just three shot attempts.
Sunday's match will conclude a two-game road stint and the Red Storm will return to Queens for the first time in two weeks to face RV Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
