Leyre Campo de Quevedo was named the individual champion of the meet
NEWARK, N.J. – A first-place performance from Leyre Campo de Quevedo powered the St. John's cross country team to third place at the Metropolitan Championships at Branch Brook Park on Saturday morning.
The Red Storm totaled 94 total points for third place and finished in front of Marist, Columbia, Hofstra, Fordham, Ramapo, NJIT and St. Peters. Seton Hall claimed the Metropolitan Championship title while Manhattan came in second.
Four St. John's runners secured personal-best 5K times at Branch Brook Park.
"We couldn't defend our team title and slipped in the standings. Our day was highlighted by Leyre's win as she raced with great competitive poise," said Head Coach Elliott Blount. "Ezgi is finding her stride and we even saw improvements toward the back of our unit. With three weeks left until BIG EAST, we must maintain focus and continue to raise the level of confidence."
Campo de Quevedo secured the first individual championship of her Red Storm career, winning the race on a personal-best 5K finishing time of 17:45.7. The freshman has led the Red Storm in all three meets so far this season.
Ezgi Yasar followed behind Campo de Quevedo, finishing the course on a personal-record 18:17.16 mark for fifth place in the 5K.
For the second straight meet, Ana Dobsa and Naiara Garcia finished back-to-back in 24th and 25th place, respectively. Dobsa paced the course in 19:26.72 and Garcia crossed the finish line in 19:33.58 in her collegiate 5K debut.
Cristina Stanescu came in fifth for the Red Storm, racing her way to 39th place off a 20:19.12 mark on Saturday.
Brenin Mahon and Eileen Grenandos posted their best 5K marks of the season, coming in sixth and seventh for St. John's. Mahon notched a season-best mark of 21:20.8 for 54th, while Grenandos posted a pace of 22:52.23 for 65th overall.
St. John's will be back in action next Friday, Oct. 18 when it returns to the ECAC Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
