St. John’s Readies for the ECAC Cross Country Championships

The Red Storm will compete in the ECAC Championships for the first time since the 2022 season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team is set to compete against the best of the Northeast at the ECAC Cross Country Championship on Friday in Bronx, N.Y. The 6K race will kick off at 10:45 a.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
The Red Storm is fresh off a third place finish at the Metropolitan Championship last Saturday. Head Coach Elliott Blount's squad racked up 94 total points and finished ahead of Marist, Columbia, Hofstra, Fordham, Ramapo, NJIT and St. Peters at Branch Brook Park.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo was named the first BIG EAST Female Cross Country Athlete in program history on Monday, after becoming the individual champion of the Metropolitan Championships. The freshman sensation paced the 5K course in a personal-best time of 17:45.7 to become the first Individual Metropolitan Champion for St. John's since Antonia Howard in 2016.
Ezgi Yasar came in second for the Red Storm, finishing the contest at a collegiate-best mark of 18:17.16 for fifth place. Ana Dobsa and Naiara Garcia placed back-to-back in 24th and 25th place, respectively.
Cristina Stanescu came in fifth for the Red Storm, racing her way to 39th place off a 20:19.12 mark. Brenin Mahon and Eileen Grenandos rounded out the team's performance at the meet, coming in sixth and seventh for St. John's. Mahon secured a season-best mark of 21:20.8, while Grenandos posted a 22:52.23 result.
The Johnnies will make their return to the ECAC Cross Country Championship for the first time since the 2022 season on Friday. The squad came in 27th place behind top 100 finishes from Claire Cushing and Ana Markovina in its last appearance at the meet.
The Red Storm is set to race against 23 other teams, including BIG EAST foe and 2024 Metropolitan Champion, Seton Hall.
Following this weekend's meet, St. John's will prepare for the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on Nov. 1 in Leesburg, Va.
