Red Storm head to Rhode Island with a 3-0 record on the year
QUEENS, N.Y– Following a late-game run at Loyola Maryland to move to 3-0, the St. John's women's basketball team will close out its longest road stretch of the season on Sunday at Rhode Island.
The contest from the Ryan Center is slated to tip-off at 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+. Zach Petrick and Aidan Garvey will have the call from Kingston. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies moved to 3-0 on Wednesday night after a 69-61 win at Loyola Maryland. The Red Storm trailed, 60-57, in the final five minutes before engineering a 12-1 run while holding the Greyhounds without a field goal for the final 4:37 to mount the comeback.
The Red Storm relied on free throw shooting in the final quarter at Reitz Arena, hitting 11 shots from the charity stripe over the final 3:35 to seal a road victory. Overall, the Red Storm shot 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the free throw line, including 12-for-14 (80%) in the final quarter.
Through its first three contests, St. John's is averaging 72.0 points per game and shooting at a 50.6 percent clip from field goal range, which ranks 24th nationally as of Saturday. The Red Storm have held opponents to just 50 points per game and boast a turnover margin of plus-9.7, which ranks 31st in NCAA Division I.
Lashae Dwyer poured in a season-high 22 points in the winning effort and shot 12-for-14 (85.7%) from the free throw line. The guard's 12 makes from the charity stripe marked the most by a Red Storm player since Qadashah Hoppie broke the school record on Nov. 24, 2018, and tied for ninth-most in a single-game in program history.
Just three games into her St. John's career, Dwyer, a Miami transfer has made her mark averaging a team-high 16.7 points per game, which ranks seventh in the BIG EAST. The Toronto, Canada native has finished in double-figures three-straight games for the first time in her career. The senior's 22-point outing on Wednesday sat just one shy of her career-high of 23, which she set against Florida State on Dec. 21, 2022.
Another pair of transfers has made an instant impact off the bench. Kylie Lavelle ranks second on the team in scoring with 9.0 points per game and leads the squad in rebounding averaging 4.0 per contest. The junior is shooting 62.5 percent from the field. Ariana Vanderhoop has been lights out from downtown to start the year. The graduate student is shooting 60.0 percent from beyond-the-arc, which ranks top-30 in Division I and is chipping in 8.0 points per game.
Team captain Jailah Donald matched her career-bests in points (13) and made 3-pointers (3) at Loyola Maryland. The junior leads the Johnnies in distribution averaging 3.0 assists per game and tallied a game-high four helpers on Wednesday night.
St. John's and Rhode Island will square off for the 14th time and the second consecutive year. The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 9-4 and will travel to Kingston for the first time in 14 years. In last year's meeting in Queens, the two squads went into the final quarter tied before the Red Storm spurred a 12-2 scoring run and outpaced the Rams, 23-12, in the fourth to claim a 55-44 victory at Carnesecca Arena. Skye Owen scored a career-high 14 points in that contest.
URI enters the contest with an even 2-2 record to start the 2024-25 campaign. The Rams most recently fell at home to Maine, 73-57, on Wednesday night. The squad is averaging 40.8 rebounds and 4.8 blocks per game. URI matched a program-record with 10 blocks in the season opener against Stonehill on Nov. 4.
Two Rams average in double-figures as Harsimran Kaur (12.5 points per game) and Anaelle Dutat (10.0 points per game) to pace the squad. Hawa Komara ranks first in the Atlantic 10 and 27th in the country in total rebounds with 35.
Following Sunday's contest, the Red Storm will return home for the first time in 17 days to face Marist at 7 p.m on Thursday.
