Dominant Third Quarter Propels St. John’s Past Rhode Island, 60-45

Red Storm engineered 17-2 run to end the third frame
KINGSTON, R.I.– The St. John's women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit and outscored Rhode Island 42-18 in the second half to capture a 60-45 road victory on Sunday.
Red Storm orchestrated a 17-2 run at the end of the third quarter to regain control after a slow start offensively in the first half. The Red Storm shot 53.8 percent from the floor and held Rhode Island to 23.1 percent from the field in the latter half of Sunday's contest at the Ryan Center.
The Johnnies remain undefeated on the year after sweeping their longest road swing of the season winning three games in nine days away from home.
St. John's shot a season-high 88.9 percent (16-18) from the free throw line, including 90 percent (9-10) in the fourth quarter. Over the last two games, the Johnnies have shot 21-for-25 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Skye Owen netted a career-high 15 points on Sunday shooting 5-for-8 from the floor. The junior set her career-best against the Rams for the second time after scoring 14 in last year's meeting against Rhode Island.
Jailah Donald scored all 12 of her points in the second half, including 10 in the momentum shifting third quarter. The junior shot 4-of-6 (66.7%) from the field and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. The Inglewood, Calif., native is averaging 12.5 points over the last two contests.
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the third Johnnie to finish in double-figures totaling 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting. Tara Daye paced the squad in rebounding for the second time this year grabbing seven boards.
In the opening few minutes, the Red Storm forced the Rams into early foul trouble forcing six in the opening 4:23. St. John's recorded five of its first seven points from the charity stripe as URI jumped out a 12-7 lead, holding the Red Storm scoreless for nearly four minutes. The drought was ended, as Ber'Nyah Mayo drove it to the cup and finished the lay-in. Owen nailed the first 3-pointer of the game for the Johnnies to make it a two-point game, 14-12. The home side tallied the final bucket take a 16-12 lead after the opening frame.
In a low-scoring second quarter, Lashae Dwyer swiped a pass tallying one of her game-high three steals and beat the URI defender with a hesitation move for the lay-in as URI lead, 18-16, with 5:36 to play. The Rams went on a 9-2 run to end half and took their largest lead of the day, 27-18, into the locker room.

Midway through the frame, Owen knocked down a triple from the corner before Donald splashed one from the top of the key to cap off a 10-0 run that gave the Red Storm the lead, 32-31. In the final minute of the third quarter, Donald finished a lay-up before Phoenix Gedeon drew a crucial charge, one of her three on the day, to force the turnover. On the next possession, Donald launched a contested desperation heave from 25-feet away as the shot clock expired that gave the Johnnies a six-point cushion, 39-33, heading into the fourth. The Red Storm ended the stanza on a 17-2 run and outscored Rhody 21-6 in the third quarter.

Owen tallied seven points in the final stanza and Mayo converted a reverse lay-up to bring the lead to double-digits, 53-43, with 1:01 to play. Following Sunday's contest, the Red Storm will return home for the first time in 17 days to face Marist at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
