Red Storm return to Queens for the first time in 17 days following 3-0 road swing
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will return home for the first time in 17 days on Thursday night, when it hosts Marist for a 7 p.m. contest at Carnesecca Arena.
Thursday's contest will be streamed on FloSports with Sam Kuperman and Ralph Bednarczyk on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com and to purchase tickets click here.
All fans who bring canned food to the box office to be donated to City Harvest, a New York City based charity organization that aims to feed those in need during the holiday season, will receive a free ticket for Thursday's contest and Sunday's game against Stony Brook.
The Red Storm remain undefeated at 4-0 following an early season three-game road swing. The Johnnies have won all four contests by eight points or more and boast an average margin of victory of 20.3.
In its last contest, St. John's rebounded from a nine-point halftime deficit at Rhode Island to claim a 60-45 victory in Kingston. The Red Storm outscored the Rams, 42-18, in the second half and strung together a dominant 17-2 run to end the third frame at the Ryan Center.
Skye Owen went for a career-high 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the win over URI. In two career games against the Rams, the junior has posted a career-best twice and averaged 14.5 points. Fellow classmate Jailah Donald chipped in 12 points at the Ryan Center, all in the second half.
For the second-straight week, Lashae Dwyer was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, the conference office announced on Monday. Dwyer has led the team in scoring averaging 14.5 points per game. The high-energy guard has logged three double-figure scoring efforts and poured in 22 points against Loyola Maryland, the highest mark by a Johnnie this season.
The Red Storm defense is holding opponents to just 48.8 points per game this season, which ranks 20th in NCAA Division as of Wednesday. The Johnnies' swarming unit is logging 10.3 steals per contest as three players- Dwyer (2.3), Owen (2.0) and Tara Daye (2.0) all rank top-13 in the BIG EAST in swipes per game.
In the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena, the Red Storm hold a 26-4 record over its last 30 contests, dating back to the 2021-22 campaign. In non-conference games, the squad holds a 12-1 mark over its last 13 games, including four-straight.
St. John's joins No. 2/2 UConn and Seton Hall as the only three BIG EAST women's basketball program with an unscathed record this season.
Marist comes to Queens with an even 2-2 record on the year and have won two of its last three contests. Most recently, the Red Foxes fell at Stony Brook on Monday night, 69-49. The Red Foxes shot just 30.3 percent from the floor.
The Red Foxes are led by a scoring tandem of Morgan Lee and Lexie Tarul, who are both averaging 11.8 points per game. Marist has moved the ball efficiently through its first four games averaging 15.0 assists per contest, which ranks second in the MAAC. The Red Foxes have been firing away from beyond-the-arc ranking 31st in the country with 9.0 made triples and 28th with 28.3 3-point attempts per contest.
Thursday marks the seventh all-time meeting between the programs, as the Red Storm have captured six-straight, dating back to 2001. The Johnnies are 3-0 against the Red Foxes in Queens and Head Coach Joe Tartamella holds an unbeaten 4-0 record.
The two sides met last year in Poughkeepsie as the Red Storm outlasted Marist, 50-40, in a low-scoring affair at McCann Arena on Dec. 2, 2023. Owen tallied a career-high six steals, including five in the opening half as the Red Foxes were held to just 13 points in the first half.
Thursday's contest opens a three-game homestand for the Red Storm as it will host Stony Brook on Sunday and Harvard on Thanksgiving Day.
