St. John’s Rolls Past Marist, 69-49

Lashae Dwyer records first career double-double totaling 15 points and 12 rebounds
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team rolled to a wire-to-wire 69-49 victory at Carnesecca Arena on Thursday night, 69-49.
The Johnnies engineered a hot start in the opening quarter, where the Red Storm made seven-straight field goals and scored 25 points in the first 10 minutes.
The Red Storm were on fire from beyond-the-arc, making 12 3-pointers against the Red Foxes, the program's most since the 69-64 win over UTSA Nov. 26, 2022. Six different players made a 3-pointer during Thursday night's game.
The Johnnies' recorded a season-high 20 assists on 25 made field goals, including nine in the opening quarter.
The Red Storm shot 87.5 percent (7-8) from the free throw line. On the year, the squad is shooting 80.0 percent from the charity stripe
Lashae Dwyer was all over the box score and registered her first career double-double finishing with 15 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. The senior smashed her previous career-high on the glass of eight boards, which she set at Miami.
Coming off a career-high scoring performance on Sunday, Skye Owen continued to find her offensive groove totaling logging 13 points and made a career-best three triples. The junior guard matched Dwyer for a game-high five assists in her first start of the season.
Ariana Vanderhoop was the third player to finish in double-figures registering 11 points and Phoenix Gedeon added seven points and five boards.
The Johnnies got off to an incredible start hitting seven straight field goals jumping out to a 17-2 lead. St. John's made three of its first four attempts from long-range as Jailah Donald, Dwyer and Owen all cashed in from beyond-the-arc. Gedeon finished a fast break lay-in off a steal and Dwyer capped off the dominant scoring stretch and forced a Marist timeout with 5:37 left in the first. As Marist began to put points on the board, Vanderhoop nailed the fifth triple of the stanza with 0:35 left as St. John's took a 25-12 lead after the opening 10 minutes, its highest single-quarter point total this season.
Red Storm held Marist scoreless for the first 8:45 of the second frame and scored the quarters first 13 points, capped off by a triple from Dwyer, as the Red Storm lead grew to its largest of the night, 40-12. Marist added the final five points of the half as the Johnnies took a 23-point lead into the locker room, 40-17.
In the third frame, Dwyer drilled a triple to open the scoring. Owen continued to knock shots down from beyond-the-arc as Owen hit a triple with 6:29 left in the third. The Red Storm maintained control through the rest of the third frame and carried a 57-34 advantage
As St. John's continued to coast off its 20-point cushion, Owen hit her career-high third triple of the game. The Red Foxes strung together a 6-0 spurt to bring the deficit to its lowest since the first quarter at 14, 63-49. Ariel Little halted the run with a drained triple from the top of the key. Vanderhoop flushed the Johnnies' 12th triple of the night to complete the scoring and a 20-point victory on their home court.
With the win, St. John's moves to 5-0 for the second time in the last three years and has won four of its five games by 15 points or more.
The Red Storm will be back at Carnesecca on Sunday afternoon to face Stony Brook at 2 p.m. The contest will be streamed on FloSports.
