St. John’s Welcomes Stony Brook on Sunday

Red Storm hold undefeated 5-0 record on the year
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will look to keep the momentum going on Sunday when it hosts Stony Brook at 2 p.m.
Tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased here, as part of our annual food drive all fans that bring a canned food item to the box office will receive a free ticket as the food will be donated to City Harvest, a New York City based charity organization that helps feed those in need during the holiday season. The non-conference contest will also be streamed on FloSports with Johnny Gadamowitz and Edona Thaqi on the call from Queens.
St. John's moved to 5-0 on Thursday night after a wire-to-wire 69-49 victory over Marist at Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm are one of 26 teams in NCAA Division I to post a 5-0 record are better this season as of Nov. 23 and join No. 2/2 UConn as the only undefeated teams in the BIG EAST.
The Johnnies made seven-straight field goals in the opening quarter rolling to a 17-2 run to start the game and never looked back. The Red Storm engineered its highest single-quarter total pouring in 25 in the first and made 12 3-pointers in the game with six different players.
The 12 made 3-pointers during Thursday's win tie for third-highest in a single-game in program history and sat just two shy of the program record set on Dec. 30, 2007 against Morgan State. The Johnnies are shooting 39.3 percent from beyond-the-arc, which ranks first in the BIG EAST and 26th in NCAA Division I.
The Red Storm defense proved suffocating once again on Thursday night, holding the Red Foxes scoreless for the first 8:45 of the second quarter to just 33.9 percent shooting from the field. In five games, the Johnnies have held opponents under 50 points four times and rank 15th in the country in scoring defense allowing just 48.8 points per game.
The charity stripe is another area where the Red Storm have excelled. St. John's is shooting 80.0 percent from the free throw line, which ranks 15th in NCAA Division I. Over the last three games, the squad has made 41-of-49 attempts from the line, an impressive clip of 83.7 percent.
Lashae Dwyer is coming off her first career double-double on Thursday night going off for 15 points and a career-best 12 rebounds. The back-to-back BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection has made an instant impact since stepping on-campus and is leading the team averaging 14.6 points per game.
Skye Owen had another strong performance after netting a career-high 15 points at Rhode Island on Sunday. The junior made her first start of the season against Marist and finished with 13 points, including a career-high three made 3-pointers. Over the last two contests, the New York City product is averaging 14.0 points and had a season-high five assists on Thursday night.
St. John's and Stony Brook, separated by just 38 miles will meet on the hardwood for the 12th time on Sunday afternoon. The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 9-2, and hold a 4-1 mark in games played in Queens.
In the last meeting between the two programs, St. John's coasted to a 78-52 victory at home on Nov. 19, 2022. The Red Storm held the Seawolves' to just 28.1 percent shooting from the field and engineered a 28-point third quarter to tally a decisive win.
A familiar face will roam the sidelines for Stony Brook as former four-year St. John's captain Joy McCorvey is in her first year at the helm on Long Island. McCorvey played in Queens from 2007-10, where she was a top-30 candidate for the 2010 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and a member of the St. John's University President's Society. She will be welcomed back with a pre-game ceremony before Sunday's tip-off.
