Red Storm are coming off its largest win since 2007; dominating Saint Peter’s, 80-39 on Monday
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team will begin a three-game road swing on Friday night, when it makes the short trip to LIU for a 6 p.m. contest at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn.
Friday's contest will be streamed on NEC Front Row with Nick Faria and Makayla Berroud on the call from Brooklyn.
The Red Storm opened its 2024-25 campaign in dominant fashion, blowing past Saint Peter's, 80-39, on Monday. The lopsided win marked the largest margin of victory for the Johnnies' since Nov. 25, 2007, when it routed Dartmouth, 74-31.
St. John's forced the Peacocks into the 27 turnovers, matching its highest number of takeaways since it created 27 against Marquette on Dec. 28, 2017. The squad recorded 12 steals its highest mark since it logged 13 in last year's season opener against LIU on Nov. 6, 2023. The lockdown defense held the Peacocks scoreless for 12:40 during the first half and to just 39 points over 40 minutes, the fewest total by an opponent since it held Monmouth to 39 on Nov. 6, 2022.
On the offensive end, the Johnnies shot an efficient 54.1% (33-61) and 42.9% (9-21) from long-range. St. John's shot 76.9% from the floor in the first quarter, which jumpstarted a 26-0 run that put the game out of reach in the opening half.
The transfers shined in their debuts in Queens as Lashae Dwyer, Ariana Vanderhoop and Kylie Lavelle all finished in double-figures and amassed 40 of the Red Storm's 80 points. Dwyer led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting in just 21 minutes of action. The Miami transfer also chipped in four steals, four assists and four boards. Vanderhoop finished with 14 points off the bench knocking down a career-high four 3-pointers and Lavelle added 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor.
Returning junior Tara Daye had a strong season debut totaling nine points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting, three assists and three steals.
Head Coach Joe Tartamella began his 13th season at the helm with a victory marking his eighth straight. The Johnnies' head coach holds a 12-1 mark in season openers and is seeking his 225th career win on Friday night.
LIU will play its first contest at home on Friday night after beginning the season with an 83-59 setback at Lehigh on Monday. Freshman Shanaii Gamble led the team with 18 point on 8-of-12 shooting from the field in her collegiate debut.
The Sharks finished with an 8-22 overall record and a 5-11 mark in the NEC play in 2023-24. The Sharks lost both of their leading scorers from last season but return its leading rebounder in Amaya Dowdy, who logged six boards per contest.
Last year, the two schools faced off in the season opener as the Red Storm blew past the Sharks, 81-44, on Nov. 6, 2023. Unique Drake went for 27 points in the decisive win as the Johnnies engineered a 25-2 scoring run to conclude the first half to cruise at Carnesecca Arena.
Friday marks the first road contest against formerly LIU Brooklyn since 2008, when the Red Storm recorded a 65-46 victory.
