St. John’s to Face Hofstra on MSG Sportsnet

Red Storm will face local foe for the first time in 12 years
QUEENS, N.Y.– For the first time since 2012, the St. John's women's basketball team will face Hofstra on Wednesday night and the game will air on MSG Sportsnet.
The Red Storm and Pride will tip-off at 6 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on Long Island. The non-conference contest will air on MSG Sports Network, check channel listings here and will also be streamed on FloSports Dan Savarino and Tom Verde will have the call from Hempstead.
St. John's is coming off a pair of wins over power conference opponents last week after moving past Penn State and Wake Forest. The Red Storm hold an 8-1 record on the year and are 4-0 away from home.
In its last contest against Wake Forest on Sunday, St. John's lockdown defensive effort propelled it to a 63-45 win at Carnesecca Arena. After holding the Demon Deacons to just 15 points in the opening half, the visitors orchestrated a run to trim the deficit to three midway through the fourth quarter. The Johnnies ended the game on a 17-2 stretch ignited by a pair of crucial 3-pointers from Skye Owen, who finished with a career-high 18 points.
For the sixth time this season, the Johnnies held their opponents to 50 points or less and rank fifth in the country in scoring defense allowing opponents to just 49.3 points per game. The Red Storm defensive unit is holding the opposition to 25.4 percent shooting from 3-point range and force 18.7 turnovers per game.
St. John's also rank top-five nationally in the free throw percentage shooting 81.1 percent from the charity stripe. In Sunday's win over Wake Forest, the Red Storm knocked down a season-high 19 free throws and went 11-for-11 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Lashae Dwyer was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll and named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association Player of the Week after a pair of stellar performances last week. The senior averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 steals per game during the 2-0 week. The Toronto native is logging a team-high 15.6 points per game and has finished in double-figures in eight of nine games this season. Defensively, Dwyer has been a pest recording 3.1 steals per game, which ranks atop the BIG EAST and 15th in the country.
Phoenix Gedeon had her first double-double in a St. John's uniform on Sunday totaling 11 points and 14 boards. The senior's rebounding total tied the highest by a Johnnie since Jillian Archer pulled down 17 on New Year's Eve in 2022.
The two schools separated by just 10 miles will square off for the first time since Nov. 17, 2012. The Red Storm lead the all-time series, 15-2, dating back 50 years to the inaugural 1974 season. The last meeting marked Head Coach Joe Tartamella's fourth-ever game leading the program as the Red Storm routed Hofstra, 73-47. In 13 years at the helm, Tartamella holds a 31-5 (.861) record and won 10-straight against schools located in New York State.
Hofstra comes into the contest with a 3-5 record on the year and are fresh off a home victory over Howard on Sunday, 55-52. The Pride have been strong on the offensive glass averaging 14.6 boards per game, which ranks 51st nationally.
The Pride are led by junior guard Chloe Sterling, who is averaging 16.5 points per game. The James Madison transfer is a volume shooter logging 17.3 field goal attempts in 36.0 minutes per game.
