Red Storm holds an opponent under 40 points for the third time this season
HEMPSTEAD, N.Y.– Fueled by another lockdown defensive performance, the St. John's women's basketball team sailed past Hofstra, 62-38.
Wednesday night's stellar defensive effort on Long Island marked the third time this season the Red Storm (9-1) held its opponent to under 40 points. With the win, the Red Storm advance to 9-1 on the year.
Kylie Lavelle tied season-high's in points (15) and rebounds (8) in a strong performance at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Center. The junior made her first seven field goals of the night and finished 7-for-9 (77.8%) from the field.
Lashae Dwyer finished in double-figures for the ninth time in 10 games and led all scorers with 18 points, including 14 in the latter half. The senior added four assists and two steals on the evening.
Ber'Nyah Mayo dished out a season-high six assists, the most a Red Storm player during the 2024-25 campaign.
The Red Storm defense, which came into the game ranked fifth in the country in points allowed per game and held the Pride (3-6) to just 17 second half points. It marked the seventh time this season that the Johnnies have held the opposition below 20 points in a half. St. John's boasts a stifling scoring defense of 48.2 points per game.
St. John's found its stroke from beyond-the-arc knocking down eight 3-pointers on 16 attempts on a season-best 50 percent mark from 3-point range.
In the opening quarter, four of the Johnnies' six made field goals came from beyond-the-arc. In the final minute, the Red Storm held a 10-8 edge, before Ariel Little and Ariana Vanderhoop flushed corner triples in the final 0:36 of the frame, 16-8.
In the second stanza Hofstra engineered an 8-1 run during the middle of the frame to tighten scoreline, 19-17. As the shot clock expired, Mayo jacked up a triple from deep. The Red Storm tallied the final six points of the opening 20 minutes as Lavelle's putback lay-up brought her to 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting at the break, 30-21.
In the third frame, Lavelle picked up where she left off laying one off the glass on the Red Storm's first possession. As the Johnnies began to expand their lead, Dwyer and Mayo both cashed in from downtown to make it 38-24. After Jailah Donald stretched the lead to 17, 45-28, Hofstra tallied the final basket of the third and the Johnnies went into the final quarter leading 45-30.
In the fourth quarter, Dwyer brought the energy tallying nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in the final 10 minutes. The guard nailed a triple and recorded a pair of scoop and scores as the Red Storm continued to pad its lead. St. John's held the Pride without a field goal for the final 6:32 of the game and Jayda Brown closed out the scoring with a runner off the glass, competing a 13-1 run to end the game and a 24-point victory.
St. John's will return home for its non-conference finale against Fairfield on Sunday. The contest is slated for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports.
