Lashae Dwyer finished with a team-high 17 points
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball team suffered a setback to Creighton, 75-56.
Saturday marked the program's first ever time playing on FOX as a crowd of 1,474 came out to Queens for the BIG EAST battle.
The Bluejays (10-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) led from start to finish fueled by strong performances from their top scoring duo in Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly, who combined for 39 points.
Lashae Dwyer finished in double-figures for the ninth-straight game totaling a team-high 17 points. The senior also finished with four steals on the afternoon, marking the fifth time in the last seven games the guard recorded four or more swipes.
Ber'Nyah Mayo added ten points logging her sixth double-figure scoring outing in her last seven games. The graduate student shot 4-for-5 from the charity stripe and dished out a team-best three assists.
Jade Blagrove finished with a season-high five boards and three points in 10 minutes of action. Kylie Lavelle and Jailah Donaldalso added five boards apiece.
St. John's (10-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) shot 12-for-16 (75.0%) from the free throw line, marking the eighth time the Red Storm have shot 75.0 percent or better from the charity stripe.
At the start of the game, Phoenix Gedeon made her first career 3-pointer as the shot clock expired. Dwyer made a bucket in the paint to make it, 7-5. The Bluejays proceeded to catch fire spurring a 12-2 run and force a Red Storm timeout. The Red Storm ended the dominant stretch with a pair of free throws and a bank shot from Mayo.
In the second stanza, Dwyer started off with a scoop and score on the first possession. After another forced turnover, Dwyer finished a lay-up in traffic to trim the deficit to five, 21-16. Creighton responded with nine straight points to balloon its lead back to double-digits. The Bluejays took an 18-point advantage, 39-21, into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Red Storm once again started off with defense leading into offense after Mayo's steal turned into a transition basket. The Bluejays continued to expand their lead stretching it to as many as 22 in the middle of the frame. Donald flushed a 3-pointer as the Red Storm constructed a 7-3 run to end the third quarter.
The Johnnies strung together a run in the final frame to try and claw their way back. The Red Storm opened the final frame on a 7-1 run that included a fastbreak finish from Ariel Little. The spurt ended with a made free throw from Mayo as the deficit was cut to 12, 57-45, with 6:56 to play. Once again, the Bluejays answered with a jumper from Molly Mogensen. Blagrove finished at the rim to bring it back to a 13-point game but the Bluejays responded with a pair of buckets and coasted the rest of the way.
St. John's will be back in action on New Year's Day at Providence for a 2 p.m. tip-off from Alumni Hall.
