St. John’s to Ring in 2025 at Providence

Red Storm will meet the Friars at 2 p.m. on New Year’s Day
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball program will ring in 2025 with a 2 p.m. contest at Providence on New Year's Day.
Wednesday's tilt from Alumni Hall will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Mike Mancuso and Pam Roecker on the call from the Ocean State. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Wednesday's contest will mark the first time in St. John's 50-year history that it will play a game on New Year's Day.
St. John's (10-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) will look to bounce back after Saturday setback against Creighton, 75-56. The Bluejays led wire-to-wire in Queens and shot 50 percent from the floor in the winning effort.
In non-conference play, the Red Storm tallied a 10-1 non-conference record and logged double-digit regular season victories in out-of-league competition for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign. In those contests, St. John's held opponents to an average of 50 points per game and limited three under 40.
Lashae Dwyer led the team against Creighton with her 12th double-figure scoring performance of the season tallying 17 points. The guard logged four steals reaching 40 on the season. The senior is averaging 3.1 swipes per game, which leads the BIG EAST and ranks 18th in NCAA Division I. Additionally, Dwyer is shooting 83.3 percent from the free throw line.
All-BIG EAST Preseason selection Ber'Nyah Mayo has delivered six double-figure scoring outings over her last eight contests. The graduate student ranks second on the team averaging 2.9 assists per game.
For the eighth time this season, the Johnnies shot 75.0 percent or better in Saturday's defeat. On the season, the group has made 78.3 percent of its attempts from the charity stripe, which ranks 15th nationally.
The Johnnies have excelled in taking care of the basketball this season ranking eighth in the country in fewest turnovers per game averaging just 11.5 per game. On the flip side, the squad has played disciplined defensively ranking ninth in the country in fewest fouls per contest at 13.2.
The two squads have a long-standing history and will meet for the 81st time with St. John's leading the series, 48-32. The Red Storm have won five-straight meetings tying for the second longest win streak against the Friars in the series 47-year history. The Red Storm won 14 straight battles from 2008-17.
Last year, the Johnnies swept the Friars for the second-straight year. In Rhode Island, the Red Storm edged the Friars on Jan. 6 in a low-scoring affair behind a 24-point performance from Unique Drake. In the return meeting on Senior Day, St. John's defense stalled Providence limiting it to just 14 first half points to cruise to a 60-42 victory on Feb. 24.
Providence enters the contest with a 7-8 record on the season and an 0-2 mark to start conference play. In their most recent game, the Friars were downed by No. 7/7 UConn, 67-41, in Hartford.
The Friars are led by graduate student guard Grace Efosa, who is averaging 15.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting. Both marks rank top-10 in the BIG EAST. Olivia Olsen has been force in the paint for the Friars rank top-25 in the country and atop the conference with 125 total rebounds.
