St. John’s Welcomes Wake Forest on Sunday

Red Storm are coming off a marquee road win at Penn State on Monday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's (7-1) women's basketball team will welcome an ACC opponent in Wake Forest (6-3) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
In remembrance Lou Carnesecca, who passed away on Saturday, Nov. 30 at the age off 99, the women's basketball team will wear "Lou" patches for the remainder of the season. Additionally, all fans in attendance will receive a commemorative Lou Carnesecca 526 pin, as well as a keepsake that features a custom illustration and career highlights of St. John's legendary coach.
Tickets for Sunday's contest in Queens and can be purchased here as the Red Storm will host Youth Day as all fans 12 and under wearing a jersey are eligible for a free ticket and are invited to participate in a post-game autograph session after the game.
The contest will be streamed on FloSports with Matt Levine and Edona Thaqi will be on the call from Carnesecca Arena. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm are coming off a marquee road win on Monday night over Penn State, 72-67, at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Johnnies snapped the Lady Lions' program record 17-game non-conference home winning streak, dating back Dec. 21, 2022. The win also marked St. John's first road victory over a Big Ten opponent since it down Rutgers on Nov. 19, 2015.
St. John's shot 50.0 percent from the floor and tallied 16 steals in Happy Valley, matching the program's highest total since Dec. 20, 2019, against Fairfield. The defense continued to be stout limiting the previously undefeated Lady Lions to a season-low 67 points. The Johnnies rank seventh nationally in scoring defense allowing just 49.4 points per game.
Lashae Dwyer strung together an outstanding performance on Penn State on Monday night, going off for a career-high 25 points and added seven steals, six rebounds and five assists. The senior became just the fourth player in NCAA Division I this season to tally 25 or more points and seven or more steals in a single-game this season. On the year, the Toronto native is averaging a team-leading 15.8 points and 3.0 steals per game, the latter of which ranks top-25 in the country.
Kylie Lavelle delivered a strong performance in her return to her former school, tallying 10 points, and career-high's of five assists, four steals and three blocks. Ber'Nyah Mayo finished in double-digits for the third-consecutive game at Penn State.
The Red Storm have been strong from the charity stripe shooting 80 percent from the free throw line, which ranks 10th best in the country.
The Johnnies will meet the Demon Deacons for the fifth time, as the series is tied at two games apiece. The two sides last met on Nov. 22, 2019 when the Red Storm outlasted Wake Forest, 82-74, at Carnesecca Arena. Head Coach Joe Tartamella holds a 2-1 mark against the Demon Deacons, all played in the last nine years.
Wake Forest will make the trip up north with a 6-3 record on the year after winning three of its last four games. The Demon Deacons will play their first road contest in nearly a month following a six-game homestand. Its last road contest on Nov. 10, the squad took on Villanova, falling 64-56 at Finneran Pavilion.
Similarly to the Red Storm, the Demon Deacons pride themselves on stout defense limiting teams to just 52.2 points per game, which ranks 14th nationally. Wake Forest's opponents are shooting 35.8 percent from the field and 26.4 percent from 3-point range. A trio of Demon Deacons- Tamia Jones, Elisa Williams and Malaya Cowles are averaging more than 2.0 steals per game, all ranking top-12 in the ACC.
Offensively, Rylie Theuerkauf leads the team averaging 10.1 points per game. The Tenafly, N.J., native has finished in double-figures in six of nine appearances to begin her sophomore campaign.
