Red Storm ended the game on a 14-0 run to move to 8-1 on the year
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team scored the final 14 points of the contest to down Wake Forest, 63-45, on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena.
After the Red Storm (8-1) led by as many as 18, the Demon Deacons (6-4) cut the deficit to as few as three in the fourth quarter before Skye Owen responded with a pair of crucial 3-pointers to jumpstart a 17-2 scoring stretch to end the game. The junior led all scorers with a career-high 18 points, including eight in the final quarter.
Phoenix Gedeon recorded her first double-double in her time at St. John's, totaling season-highs of 11 points and 14 boards. The senior post player went 7-for-9 from the free throw line and her rebounding total matched the highest by a St. John's player since Jillian Archer grabbed 17 at Georgetown on Dec. 31, 2022.
Lashae Dwyer finished in double-figures for the eighth time in nine games, logging 14 points. The senior recorded four steals to bring her up to 28 on the season. In the two wins over power conference opponents this week, the guard averaged 19.5 points and 5.5 steals per game.
For the fourth consecutive game, Ber'Nyah Mayo tallied a double-digit scoring effort finishing with 10 points and three assists.
The Red Storm held Wake Forest without a 3-pointer (0-for-11) for the entirety of Sunday's contest. It marked just the second time in the last five years the Johnnies have shutout their opponent from beyond-the-arc. The defense excelled once again holding its opponent to 50 points or less for the sixth time this season.
St. John's made a season-high 19 free throws in 22 attempts from the line. The Red Storm shot 86.4 percent from the charity stripe and went 11-for-11 in the final quarter. On the year, the squad is shooting 81.1 percent from the line, which ranks top-10 in the country.
After Wake Forest built an early 5-2 edge, Owen had scored five straight to jumpstart and the 8-0 Johnnies' run was capped off with a bucket from Jailah Donald. Ariana Vanderhoop flushed a triple from the top of the key before a free throw from Mayo capped off the scoring, as the Red Storm held a five-point cushion, 14-9, after the opening 10 minutes.
In the second frame, Mayo showed off the handles shaking free from a defender and sinking a mid-range jumper. Dwyer picked off the inside pass and went off to the races flashing a euro step at the rim for a lay-in, forcing a Wake Forest timeout, 20-11. The Red Storm held the Demon Deacons scoreless for the final 4:04 of the half ending it on a 6-0 run to take a 27-15 lead into the locker room. The lockdown defensive effort marked the fifth time in nine games this season the Johnnies have limited their opponent to fewer than 20 points in the first half.
In the third stanza, Owen reached double-digits after an and one just 0:46 into the frame. Mayo hit a triple and a lay-up to complete a 7-0 stretch and gave the Red Storm its largest of the day, 37-19. The Demon Deacons came roaring back with a 15-3 run to trim the deficit to six heading into the final frame.
In the final frame, Wake Forest continued to chip away at the Red Storm cutting it to as few as three, 46-43, in the final five minutes. Owen came up huge delivering two triples just 0:48 apart to ignite a 17-2 run to end the game as the Red Storm advance to 8-1 on the season.
St. John's will be back in action on Wednesday when it takes on Hofstra on the road at 6 p.m. on the MSG Network.
