QUEENS, N.Y. – For the first time in nearly two weeks, the St. John's women's basketball team will host a contest in Queens when it meets local rival Seton Hall on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Tickets for the game between the Red Storm and Pirates are free for all fans.
Tuesday's BIG EAST battle will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Maria Marino and Edona Thaqi on the call from Carnesecca Arena.
In honor of Black History Month, both teams will wear shooting shirts in remembrance of the "Black Fives". A proud BIG EAST partner, the Black Fives Foundation aims to research, preserve, showcase, teach and honor the pre-NBA era of African-Americans in basketball.
The Johnnies look to snap a two-game losing streak on Tuesday after falling on the road to No. 11/10 UConn and Butler.
In its last time out on Friday night, the Red Storm went back-and-forth with the Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse, but ultimately fell, 64-59. The game saw 10 lead changes and six ties before Butler struck last, spurring off a 7-0 run.
St. John's (14-11, 8-5 BIG EAST) committed a season-low seven turnovers, the fewest the Red Storm have had since exactly two years prior against Butler, when it tallied just six giveaways in a win over the Bulldogs in 2022.
Jillian Archer and Unique Drake combined for 45 of the team's 59 points in Indianapolis. The two leading scorers shot a combined 56.3 percent from the floor on Friday night.
Archer tied her career-high and posted her highest scoring total in nearly three years, pouring in 23 points, including 16 in the second half. The graduate student also had a banner night on the glass, pulling down a season-high 13 boards and reached the 750-rebound mark for her career. The forward's double-double marked her seventh of the season.
On the year, Archer is averaging 11.6 points on 60.3 percent shooting, 7.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. The Santa Monica, Calif., native has stamped herself on the BIG EAST leaderboards, ranking ninth in rebounding, third in blocks, first in field goal percentage and 17th in scoring.
Friday's 20-plus point performance marked the 11th of the season for Drake. The redshirt senior moved to 13th all-time on the program's all-time scoring list. The Columbia, S.C., native ranks top-3 in the BIG EAST averaging 18.7 points and is shooting at a 79.7 percent clip from free throw line.
The Red Storm return to Carnesecca Arena where it holds an 8-1 record this season. St. John's boasts a scoring margin of plus-11.8 in games played at its on-campus venue, where it has won seven-straight.
Three weeks ago, the two conference foes met at Walsh Gymnasium on Jan. 22. For the first time in 38 years in the closely contested series, 40 minutes wasn't enough to decide the outcome and the Pirates ultimately outlasted the Red Storm in overtime, 74-66. The Johnnies erased a seven-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation to force the extra period in South Orange. Ber'Nyah Mayo went for a season-high 23 points in that contest.
The overtime win marked the fourth-straight in the series for Seton Hall, but St. John's still leads, 50-38, all-time. The Red Storm are 27-12 in games played in Queens.
The Pirates arrive in Queens with 14-10 overall record and a 6-7 mark in conference play. In its last outing, Seton Hall blew past Xavier, 86-62, on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Savannah Catalon paced the Pirates with a season-high 21 points and earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors for her exemplary performance.
Azanna Baines leads the squad in scoring averaging 14.7 points per game and Amari Wright logs 5.7 assists and 2.3 steals per game, which ranks second and third in the BIG EAST, respectively.
Tuesday marks the first of three of the next four games at home for St. John's, who will next host Creighton on Friday night.
