Outfielder Jackson Tucker goes 2-for-3 with two RBIs on Saturday
HOUSTON, Texas – The St. John's baseball team (1-2) dropped its Saturday contest, 7-2, against Houston (6-0) inside Schroeder Park.
Junior Jackson Tucker went 2-for-3 at the dish, providing the Red Storm's offense with a two-run double in the seventh. Anthony Brienza also logged a pair of base knocks in the contest, tallying a run scored in the contest. Outfielder Ben Beauchamp also crossed home plate one time on Saturday.
The Johnnies put a runner in scoring position in the first two frames as Tucker and Paul Orbon both singled and reached second base in the first and second innings, respectively. However, Houston denied both threats to keep the Red Storm at bay.
The Cougars struck first as right fielder Tre Jones hit a solo shot to center in the home half of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
St. John's threatened for the third straight inning, loading the bases as Brienza legged out a bunt single, followed by a two-out walk to Garrett Scavelli and Marty Higgins taking a pitch off the elbow. Once again, Cougars' starter Antoine Jean worked out of the jam and kept the Red Storm off the scoreboard.
Following a blank top of the fourth, Houston extended its lead to three with back-to-back RBI singles from Jones and Cameron Nickens in the home half of the frame.
St. John's rallied with two outs in the top of the fifth, seeing Brienza lace a single to right-center and Scavelli work a four-pitch walk. Cougars' Jean staved off the threat and preserved his shutout through five innings.
Houston tacked on one more run in the fifth and continued to pose a threat with runners on first and second with one out. Catcher Jimmy Keenan stifled the opportunity by catching Cougars' Ace Reese trying to swipe third before a fly out to center ended the inning.
In the sixth frame, Houston added two more runs on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly to increase its lead, 6-0. Sophomore Louis Marinaro struck out the final two batters of the frame to leave the bases juiced.
The Johnnies capitalized on a Cougars' error in the seventh. With Brienza reaching on the miscue by shortstop Jake Rainess and Beauchamp standing on second, Tucker ripped the first pitch he saw down the third-base line for a two-run double, cutting Houston's lead down to four, 6-2.
Marinaro tossed a blank seventh inning, assisting on the first two outs before Keenan threw out Houston's Jones trying to steal second base to end the frame. The sophomore southpaw allowed just one hit and struck out two batters in 2.1 innings of work.
Houston scored one more time in the eighth on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch before closing out the game for the five-run victory.
The Red Storm will return to Schroeder Park for the series finale against Houston on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
