RICHMOND, VA. (Feb. 24, 2024) – Goaltender Kyle Munson made 14 saves, but the St. John's lacrosse team fell to Richmond, 18-2, on Saturday at E. Claiborne Robins Stadium in Richmond, Virginia.
Munson's 14 stops between the pipes are the most in a game for the netminder this season and marks the seventh time in his career he has made at least 14 saves in a contest.
Bobby Seel scored a pair of goals for his third multi-point game of the season. With the two points, Seel extended his team-best point and goal streaks to five games. The junior is now up to eight goals in 2024, second most on the team.
Brian Kelly picked up point 107 of his career, tallying a helper on Seel's third-quarter goal. Kelly also scooped a season-best three groundballs and caused two turnovers.
Defensively, Jack McCarthy led the team with a career-high six groundballs and forced two turnovers.
The Red Storm was strong on the clear, converting 24-of-28 attempts, its fourth game this season with at least 20 successful conversions on the clear.
After the team's traded defensive stops on the game's first two possessions, Richmond scored the contest's opening goal just over two minutes into the quarter. After putting seven shots on net over the game's first eight minutes, Seel was finally able to find the back of the net after scooping a loose ball and ripping a shot from the left side of the goal, tying the score at one. Richmond retook the lead with 2:13 left in the frame. Munson had four saves in the opening quarter.
Richmond doubled its lead 1:57 into the second and tallied another just over five minutes later to extend the lead to 4-1. The Spiders won the ensuing faceoff and scored again 30 seconds later to push their lead to four. Two more Richmond goals before halftime gave the Spiders a 7-1 lead heading into the locker rooms.
The Spiders scored seven unanswered goals to start the second half to stretch their lead to 14-1. Seel ended the Richmond run with 2:43 left in the third quarter, scoring on a man-up opportunity off a feed from Kelly. Richmond tallied one more goal in the frame, making it a 14-2 game heading into the fourth.
Four fourth-quarter goals from the Spiders put the finishing touches on an 18-2 win for the home squad.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday against Queens University of Charlotte. Faceoff from Dickson Field in Charlotte, N.C., is set for 4 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
