The Johnnies and Longhorns will square off for the fifth time in program history
AUSTIN, Texas – Coming off an 11-6 victory in its series finale at Houston, the St. John's baseball team will look to knock off its second ranked opponent of the season when it takes on No. 15 Texas on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
Live stats for Tuesday's contest will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's dropped its first two contests before handing Houston its first loss of the season with its five-run victory on Sunday. Freshman Chad Falcon unleashed a 3-for-5 day at the dish with a season-best four RBIs. The Stony Point, N.Y., native also crossed home plate once in the contest. St. John's went 8-for-15 with runners in scoring position and drove in seven of its 11 runs with two outs.
Reliever Ben Adams picked up the win while closer Sam Mettert secured his second save, both tossing 1.1 innings against the Cougars in game three. Following the weekend slate, Mettert is one of 38 players in NCAA Division I to have two or more saves through the early going.
Despite a 1-2 weekend against Houston, St. John's outfielders Jackson Tucker and Ben Beauchamp led the way, chipping in four hits apiece. Tucker matched Falcon with four RBIs on the weekend, while Beauchamp tallied a team-best four runs scored. Second baseman Anthony Brienza posted a squad-leading five base knocks to go with a pair of tallies.
Heading into Tuesday's game, Beauchamp, Brienza and Garrett Scavelli have reached base safely in all four games this season, while Falcon has done so in all three of his appearances.
St. John's and Texas will square off for the fifth time in program history as both teams look to break the 2-2 tie. The Johnnies are 57-50 against current Big 12 schools.
The Red Storm and Longhorns last linked up during the 2008 NCAA Houston Regional. The Johnnies secured a 2-1 victory in the opening matchup, rallying in the ninth inning behind an eventual game-winning RBI fielder's choice from senior captain Jeff Grantham.
The two teams met again in the elimination game and St. John's nearly erased a three-run deficit in the ninth with a two-out rally that saw a pair of singles, a hit-by-pitch and a two-run double. Texas earned the victory, 4-3, despite a continued bases-loaded threat.
Texas (6-1) is coming off a three-game sweep of Cal Poly, shutting out the opposition in all three contests. The Longhorns have not surrendered a run since the top of the fifth inning against Houston Christian and have scored 29 straight times since that point.
Through seven contests, Texas has the fourth-best ERA in the nation, sitting at 1.66. Cody Howard has yet to allow an earned run through nine innings of work, one of only three pitchers in Division I to do so.
Sophomore Jared Thomas has paced the way for the Longhorns offensively. The utilityman sits 12th in hits (16), 15th in batting average (.571), 17th in doubles (5) and 28th in runs scored (12). Teammate Peyton Powell, who is slashing .467/.515/1.000, has driven in 15 runs on 14 base knocks.
Texas will send out right-hander Max Grubbs to oppose St. John's Evan Chaffee on the bump. The sophomore is 1-0 on the season with a 3.86 ERA and four strikeouts through 4.2 innings of work.
The Red Storm will wrap up its 10-game road trip with a three-game series against Sam Houston, starting on Friday. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
