St. John’s Readies to Take On Hofstra, Adelphi and Penn State This Week

Red Storm will play a doubleheader on Thursday and one match on Saturday
The St. John's men's tennis team will play three matches in a three-day span, beginning on Thursday. The Red Storm will play a double-header tomorrow at Cunningham Park, taking on Hofstra at 10 a.m. before facing off with Adelphi at 1 p.m. Two days later, the Johnnies will meet Penn State at the Milstein Tennis Center in Manhattan for a 1 p.m. tilt.
St. John's (5-1) is coming off two victories last week, earning wins over Marist and Dartmouth. The Red Storm beat the Red Foxes, 6-1, on Thursday in Queens and earned a hard fought 4-3 victory over Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., on Saturday. Ignacio Vinas and Leon Petko excelled in doubles play last week, earning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors after claiming 6-4 victories in each match for the Johnnies.
The Red Storm and Hofstra will meet for the third consecutive year. Last season, the Johnnies put on a convincing performance against the Pride, beating their local rivals, 6-0. Ryota Kaneda played an integral part in the Red Storm's victory, teaming up with Adam Groves for a win in doubles play before putting on a dominate performance in singles play, winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0. Carl Gustavsson picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No.1 singles court.
The Pride enter its matchup with the Johnnies 1-2 on the year. In its most recent contest, Hofstra picked up its first win of the season with a 4-3 comeback victory against Marist.
St. John's and Division II-Adelphi will faceoff for the first time on Thursday. This will be the Panthers' first dual-match of 2024. Adelphi went 11-7 a season ago and advanced to the NEC Tournament semifinals.
The Johnnies and the Nittany Lions will match up for the seventh time on Saturday. The two programs faced off in University Park, Pa., in 2023, resulting in a 5-2 win for the Penn State.
Penn State beat Mount St. Mary's on Sunday to improve to 4-3 in 2024.
Following this week's matches, the Red Storm will face off with No. 10 Arizona on Wednesday, Feb 14 at the USTA National Tennis Center.
