Outfielder Ben Beauchamp went 3-for-3 at the dish with a trio of runs
Outfielder Ben Beauchamp provided a third of the Red Storm offense, going 3-for-3 with his first career home run and three tallies in the victory. The Rochester, N.Y., native finished the weekend with a team-best six runs scored and tied Jimmy Keenan with six base knocks.
Second baseman Anthony Brienza led the team with a pair of RBIs, finishing the day with a 2-for-4 outing at the dish. Keenan also logged a multi-hit performance on Sunday with a pair of singles to go with an RBI and a run scored.
The series sweep marks the first for the Johnnies (8-4) since taking down Quinnipiac in three contests last season. Brienza, Adam Agresti and Blake Mayberry wrapped up the weekend with four RBIs apiece.
St. John's broke through in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on a throwing error by Hofstra's third baseman and scoring two on the play.
Hofstra (4-9) tallied one in the run in the top of the second as Penn Sealey hit an RBI single through the left side to bring the Pride within one, 2-1.
The Johnnies quickly bolstered its lead with another two-spot in the bottom of the second. After Brienza laced a single to right, swiped second and advanced to third on a Tucker single, Luke Orbon pulled a grounder to the right side to knock in Brienza, 3-1. Mayberry turned on the first pitch he saw and roped an RBI base knock to left to push the Red Storm's edge to three, 4-1.
The Pride countered with a one-run top of the third, seeing Santino Rosso send a solo home run down the right-field line to cut the team's deficit in half, 4-2.
In the bottom of the third, St. John's retaliated with a solo shot of its own as Beauchamp launched the first offering from Carlos Martinez over the left-center wall for a 402-foot shot and a 5-2 Red Storm advantage.
Hofstra continued to chip away at the Red Storm lead, scoring one run in both the top of the fourth and fifth innings to pull within one, 5-4.
The Johnnies unloaded a three-spot on the board in the home half of the fifth. Following back-to-back one-out singles from Keenan and Beauchamp, Agresti worked a walk to load the bases. Left fielder Garrett Scavelli drove in a run after drawing a base on balls for a 6-4 advantage. Brienza ripped a 1-2 pitch up the middle and through the umpire's wickets for a two-run base knock and an 8-4 lead.
The Pride scored one run in the sixth and a pair of runs in the seventh to slash its deficit to one, 8-7, for the third time in the game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Johnnies threatened with a leadoff single from Beauchamp. The Red Storm's right fielder advanced to second on a fielder's choice and stole third before scoring on an Agresti sacrifice fly for a 9-7 edge.
Hofstra scored one more in the eighth and continued to threaten the Johnnies. With the bases loaded, reliever AJ Lausten came on and painted a 3-2 offering on the outside edge, striking out Sealey to end the frame.
Jed Boyle came on in the ninth and locked immediately with a three-pitch strikeout to Sean Lane. The righty allowed just one walk in his scoreless ninth before punching out Alex McCoy on strikes.
St. John's will return to action on Tuesday when LIU comes to Queens for a 3 p.m. contest at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Red Storm have also added a second midweek contest, welcoming Stony Brook to campus on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
